Hinges problem in my T60..How to repair it?

#1 Post by sco1984 » Sat Aug 29, 2009 11:24 am

Hello,

I have T60 2007-AY6 laptop.
I noticed today that right hinge of my T60 is loose. :|
When I open screen, it gets pulled up & if I move screen a bit I can see the hinge is getting disturbed a bit.
How can I fix it? Warranty for my laptop is over.
If I leave it as it will this damage the hinge totally or any plastic part there?

Regards,
Amey.

can you describe more about your issue?
e.g. is the screen housing going to break soon / is the screen detaching from the base / is the screen can't stay up right and falling to the back? any visible damage you can see?

No no it doesnt look that serious.

Right hand hing is like "L" size.
The aluminium L comes out a bit when i flick screen. [ not actually comes out , we can say it gets hitch, or I can say it looks like L size alumium base detaching from its base for a moment and going back to its position. ]

It doesnt come out too much. But but I must say like imagine if you have fixed a wooden stick in sand and after some time it flickers a bit due to its unstable base likewise.

Screen is fine, no crack,s laptop never fallen on floor.
Only thing bothering is while opening screen, the L shaped alluminium hing pokes or move back and forth a bit not much. But I am not sure its because something wrong happened inside on the hing base.

Look at the back of your t60, near the hinges, there should be a screw on each side of the machine, one for each hinge. You can use a screwdriver and tighten those up. Those are the screws that attach the hinge to your machines base.

agree with deforest, try and tighten up the screws. For my T61, there are 1 screw next to kensington lock hole and 2 screws at the bottom of the hinge (next to rubber foot). Let us know that will fix that up or not.

In a 14.1" T60, the right hinge is held using two screws. One is accessible from the outside of the laptop, the other isn't. There are two screws on the bottom of the laptop, in the corner: one in the rubber foot, the other next to it. The one in the foot holds the keyboard bezel, the other one is for the hinge. Try to tighten it.

The second hinge screw is inside the laptop, under the keyboard bezel. To access it, you have to remove the palmrest and keyboard (5 screws) and then the keyboard bezel (another 5 screws IIRC). This will give you access to the top hinge screw.

If disassembling the laptop a bit is not a problem for you, consider tightening the second screw also. Download the Hardware Maintenance Manual for details about the disassembly. You may also want to visit http://www.lenovoservicetraining.com/ for some flash videos about servicing ThinkPads. Note that the T60 videos show a 15.1" version so screws placement (and number thereof) differs a bit.
