Update on solving FireGL compatibility problem

#1 Post by the_bob » Sat Aug 29, 2009 2:31 pm

After I replaced the motherboard from a model with Radeon7500 to one with FireGL T2 128MB , games and some apps either refused to work (saying there's no openGL support or need openGL 1.3 to handle texture compression) or worked very slowly, the frame rates not reflecting the upgrade as I'd expect them to. After some googling and searching the forum, I came up with a solution that did the trick:
  1. Grabbed ATI FireGL/Pro/MV Software Suite Multilanguage (or here )
  2. Unpacked the downloaded driver (start the install, let it unpack into C:\AMD\FirePro_something then cancel the install once the second installer loads )
  3. Grabbed the Mobility Modder, installed it according to the instructions on the site
  4. Ran it on the unpacked driver (point the root dir of the deiver pack, like C:\AMD\FirePro_8.583_XP32_77157, not the driver subdir )
  5. Uninstalled the old ATI driver from control panel->add/remove software
  6. Installed the modded fireGL driver
That's it, at least that worked for me. The key was manually uninstalling the old (7500) driver, it wasn't automatically replaced by the new one. I suppose the lenovo drivers would work ok at this point but hey, these are a few years old now so why bother ?

A little note, patching the firegl drivers takes a while so be patient. I only installed the display driver and it works fine, dunno about all the other bloatware in that 100MB+ package.

So yeah, I hope this helps someone in the future since the old info is quite scattered and sometimes outdated.
