600x cardbus slot stopped working after upgrading cpu

#1 Post by irha » Wed Sep 02, 2009 1:50 am

I just upgraded my cpu from 450mhz to 600mhz and was happy that it got recognized. I assembled everything back and booted into puppy (which is what I have installed), I realized that the cardbus slot is not working. Thinking there was a loose connection, I opened it up again and found that the cardbus slot is still solidly seated. In fact, I wanted to reseat it and it took quite a bit of effort to take it out (I had to insert a card and them pull it out with its help). After reseating the slot, it still didn't get recognized. The slot was working fine the last time I shut it down. Any idea what I might have messed up? I only had to remove 3 connectors while replacing the cpu (two keyboard connectors and the fan power), and I am sure they are connected back fine (keyboard is working, fan is working). I would appreciate any help in troubleshooting it.

PS: Puppy linux is actually behaving differently after the cpu upgrade. It is waiting for sometime for the cardbus to respond and then though there is no error message, it leaves me in at the command prompt, but I could type xinit and startup the gui. It never used to do that before.

I am still stuck with this problem. I replaced the old CPU back, just in case something would make it go away in the process, but of course it still doesn't work. I don't understand how the cardbus slot would stop working all of a sudden, unless it got shorted in the process, but I was wearing a antistatic wrist cable, so don't really expect that to happen. Any help on troubleshooting is really appreciated, I had big plans for the laptop with the planned cpu and memory upgrade. :(

I haven't taken apart a 600X in years but were they socketed on the motherboard or soldered? If it was socketed maybe it came loose?
I've even had socked ones where people dropped them with a PCMCIA card in them crack the socket, a bit of super glue, a couple pairs of hemostats and letting the glue cure over night fixed it long enought for them to eBay them

Sigh ... and hopefully nobody here bought one. That's a really lousy thing to do to a buyer unless they were upfront about it.

Nope, everything seems perfectly fine, no cracks and it is seated in the socket firmly.

Do you reset the BIOS after replacing the processor?

There are some screws, which fasten the MMC2-processor. One of them fasten also the cardholder - did you miss this one or any other screw?

Btw. how do you pull up the old processor?

Yes I did reset the bios, and yes, I also replaced the screw that fasten the cardholder. Regarding the removal of the processor, I can't completely recollect, but I think I just pulled up the fan holding it on top of the cpu, while twisting it a bit both ways (straight pull up seem to require a lot more force, causing unnecessary stress on the MB).

I bought a replacement slot from ebay and it still doesn't work. Makes me think that something went wrong on the motherboard itself.
