Replace a/b card with a/b/g card?

#1 Post by methdxman » Tue Jun 08, 2004 2:38 pm

I have the a/b wireless solution with my Thinkpad T40. Is there anyway I can replace that internal card with an internal a/b/g card? I would prefer not to use a PC Card to get G access. Thanks.

Yes you can use the a/b/g card in your T40
But if you do this yourself you will be voiding your warranty
If IBM finds out you do it.
Or you can take the machine to an authorized service provider and have it done at your expense.

The IBM mini-pci wireless A/B/G card is a customer replaceable unit,
meaning you can replace it yourself without worrying about
voiding the warranty.

Yes, but methdxman wants to replace his IBM Dual-Band Wi-Fi Mini PCI, and it's not a customer replaceable unit. In order to remove the a/b Mini PCI, you need to remove special screws and with that you will will be voiding the warranty (if IBM finds out). These screws (supposedly) can be only used once, but I know others were able to reuse it. You can also order these special screws from IBM.

Here is the list of machines that have non-CRU Mini PCI cards (all of them have IBM a/b Mini-PCI):
2373-2Ax, 33x, 44x, 92x, 93x, 9Cx, G1x, G3x, G4x except xxE, xxJ
2374-2Ax, 44x, 9Cx except xxE, xxJ, 2379-D5x, 2373-2AJ, 33J, 44J, 92J, 93J, 9CJ, G1E,2AE, 33E, 44E, 92E, 93E, 9CE, G1E, 2373-JTU, JTV, JXU, JXV, 2373-JTX, except JTU, JTV; JXx except JXU, JXV

Let me see if I understand G-Man... So one can freely replace the 2373-HTU wireless card that only has 11b? I am right?

Do you know how much a 11b/g card costs?

Yes, 2373-HTU's Mini PCI is customer replaceable unit. The IBM a/b/g Mini PCI is $99, the Intel b/g from IBM is $59.

With one of the credit card discounts (Visa, Mastercard, Discover), the IBM a/b/g is $89.10, the Intel b/g from IBM is $53.10.

The Wi-Fi Mini PCI card has to be IBM certified, otherwise it won't work.
