Going to Italy

#1 Post by ThinkPad » Wed Feb 09, 2005 10:59 pm

With my luck I have to go to Italy next week for work. I will be in Trieste for majority of the time, but I will have a couple days off and want to do some exploring. Im thinking of going to Venice, which is pretty close to Trieste. To those who have been there what are some must-do things when im there.

Do they have public transportation to go from place to place? like a local underground train service. What else should I know before I get there.

This time I am taking my Thinkpad and I just ordered a 9-cell battery, so I can get some work done.

Oh yes, Venice is renowned for its subway. Not to be missed.

They don't charge extra for the SCUBA gear either.

I know about the water taxis in Venice, that should be something interesting. What is the weather this time of the year?

wow, I never knew that.

When I went to England this winter it said to be around the 40's F but instead it was kinda nice in the 55 F range. Being in the south east range from the UK Im assuming it will be a little warmer and not nearly as cold as the chicago so I was hoping for some first person perspective.

It's winter in Venice. The bad news is that the best you can hope for is temperatures in the 40s to 50s and overcast skies with passing showers.

The good news is that, comparatively, you'll have the place pretty much to yourself! You could probably do a self guided tour of the Doge's Palace and the Bridge of Sighs, something you couldn't even think of in season.

Start here for more ideas: http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/art ... sights.htm

Do a tour of the islands: http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/art ... s-tour.htm

There are frequent trains ex Trieste to Venice as Trieste is the gateway and train change point for travel to and from Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, etc.

A note of caution. Trieste is a hub for smuggling into and out of the former "Eastern" bloc to the EU and as such has a well deserved reputation for being someplace that you want to always know where your property is! Stay off the ferries out of Trieste!

Venice is someplace that everyone should visit and the last time I was there everyone else was also!

Venice is a must see even in winter, but you can also catch trains from Trieste up into the mountains if you want an even more wintery experience.

Thanks for the information.

I have Saturday all day off, so I think I will take the train to Venice and spend a day exploring and taking pictures. Should I get an italian language book or can I get by with english? When I went to Spain, EVERYTHING was in spanish and hardly anyone spoke english. Luckily, I had my trusty spanish lady to help me out ;)

I swear this story is true...

When I was in Trieste I arrived via aircraft carrier - I was tech repping with a Marine F-18 squadron on the boat.

After a few days enjoying a hotel bed instead of a rack one level below the flight deck, I took the train over to Venice and ran into one of my young Marines on the train. He told me he'd been going to Venice every day since we hit port because he had met an Italian girl.

I asked him how it was going and he said she was teaching him Italian. He said yesterday she had taught him how to say "Do you want to have sex?"

So I asked him if he took her up, and he said "No, she didn't mean it like that - she was just teaching me how to say it."

Gawd I love the Marines. So dedicated, so gung ho, so stupid...
