A full "activekill" on the other (HP) travelstar and no recognition. I feel that this point i have to go with bad IDE header? It did give me the 2010 error just the once, but no again. As far as i am able to tell the drive is seated properly. maybe this is why it found its way to ebay?

Would one of those ultrabay 2nd HDD adapters bypass this issue or are they attached to the same controller?

I believe that the controller is the same but you'd be hanging it off the second channel. From what I recall, the main HD is on the first channel (as the master drive) and the Ultrabay operates off the second channel, also as the master drive. Obviously the IDE connectors are different ones, so if there's a bad connector inside the HD bay, then an Ultrabay HD adapter will bypass it.

Thats what I will try then...No issues booting from another channel/connector I presume?

OK,

On a whim i got windows XP to install (with and without a format) to my T40 drive via USB Attached to the new T43. It would however not boot from it. It would get to the install point where its done copying files and restarts and you are supposed to let it boot from the HDD, but just a black screen with the cursor.

I thought i would run a kill disk, thinking it might be the hidden IBM partition causing the problem. Its a 40GB drive, but kill disk says its only 33.46GB, about the size missing for the IBM partition. The kill disk is still running, but i suspect after the install it might be the same result. I

I did notice that when i finished the install and tried to boot from USB and it failed-I put the drive in the normal HDD bay and while it didnt boot, the HDD icon did flash until the blank screen came up.

What else can I do? l will post results after the kill disk, but after using the HP drive that was "killed" and getting nothing, Im not sure what else there is.

***EDIT* Killdisk complete, XP installed over USB, reboots to windows loading screen and gives me bluescreen asking for virus check and HDD configure/termination. Jumper on all 3 settings, same effect. Couldnt install Vista to USB.

Hey everyone, been a while since I've fooled with this thing, but I got ultrabay HDD caddy today. When i get home from work I'll give it another shot.

If I understand correctly, I should be able to dump in my old HDD ("killed" or NTFS formatted?) and install windows like any other system?

If for some reason the T43 wont recognize the drive in either bay (and it has over USB, even partially installed XP), then what are my next steps? I can post pics of all the BIOS setup screens and you guys can look for something im missing, but what-if any-screens would that be?

Thanks,

B

You'll have to change the boot order in BIOS to make the 2nd HDD ultrabay adapter first in boot order. It may be called something else like HD1.

I am happy to report success. A full windows install that seems stable using the ultrabay. I downloaded everything I thought important from lenovo, but I am still missing some things:
Access IBM button does nothing in windows.
WIFI is not installed, though i got the intel b/g/n driver and they install successfully (?)
Hardware manager shows yellow question marks on:
Audio controller
Network adapeter (assume this is the wifi, as the ethernet was installed and works)
PCI device
Unknown device

I would also like to be able to get the access IBM to "restore" using the hidden partition-which i think is still there. THe drive is a 40, and windows shows 31 for capacity. Can that be downloaded now that its running, or do i need the discs?

Thanks all! Ill have the T40 up for sale here soon.

If you downloaded the drivers for WiFi from Lenovo, when you run them as downloaded they do not install that way, only extract the install files. You must go into a sub-directory of X:\Drivers and find the setup program, where X is your boot drive.

Yep, did that. Ran the installer(after the extractor) says hardware installed, must restart to take effect, blah blah. I noticed there are 2 wifi card drivers from lenovo. Is there a way to tell which i have or should i just install both and see which works?

-also, Lenovo webside says max for this machine is 2GB of PC 4200, does that include the 512 already loaded in? If so, how hard is it to pull out the factory ram chip and reseat with 2 1GB sticks, and which brands are relaible for these?

You guys are the best. Thank you.

So whats the highest capacity RAM solution? pull out the factory chip and put 2x 1GB sticks in? or will it utilized 1.5GB of a 2GB stick if inserted in the aux ram slot?

Go for the 2gb!

I have one R51e (same Intel chipset) that is using 1.5gb DDR2. The other, an R52 (the sister unit of the T43), is using two matching 1gb sticks of DDR2 5300 RAM.

CPUID confirms that the R52 is running in dual-channel mode and that machine flies!!! Like a hot knife through butter :D

The R51e is still fast but the R52 seems to have a slight edge.

Never had a laptop very far apart, how difficult is it to get that stock chip out?

Also, since we have it narrowed down to a bad IDE0 connector...is there a way to fix that? I would love to get the HDD back in the main bay and have an optical drive again or more storage since i have the tray now.

You're looking at motherboard replacement for that one.

The "hidden" RAM slot is under the keyboard, 4 screws later you're there.

I think it works just fine with the HDD in the bay slot...

Are those 4 keyboard screws marked with little keyboard icons underneath?

Any brand of PC4200 ram recommened around here to be best/better or is all the same these days?

5300 on a T43 (non-P)? Lenovo site said 4200 was it, but if you have it running (at it registers at that speed?) Ill take your word for it.

Hold on a sec...let me take the lid off my memory bay...

I have a... pair of Samsung M470T2953EZ3-CE6's in my R52. You can google this and see that they are PC2-5300S'. I'm not sure what the S' are but I got a pair for $16 dollars on Fleabay. The seller only had a handful so I really was lucky :)

If I remember the Laptop will clock it down regardless of the rated speed. I just got the higher number sticks b/c I may use them on a more recent laptop sometime in the future that can do those speeds!

Yep, T43 will run on PC5300 RAM, no problems there whatsoever, tested a ton of my past ones with it...

Given that you were sold a computer with a dud motherboard, why don't you return it to the seller for a refund?

Bluetooth, fingerprint reader, ethernet/NIC, sound, modem, wifi card.
Maybe you need to install the Intel System drivers....

Probably the Lenovo System Interface Driver.
