Installing the blue WWAN antenna on x200

#1 Post by tchatter » Fri Sep 04, 2009 6:32 am

A couple of months ago, I bought a x200 (7458-5FU) on eBay. Although described as WWAN upgradeable, it was missing the blue and red antennae, but had the SIM slot. It also had an Intel 5100 wireless module. After doing some reading and research on this forum, I bought an Ericsson F3507g WWAN card and an Intel 5300 card. Both are now installed in my laptop (the 5300 is using all three wires). Since the laptop was missing the red and blue antennae, I bought these on eBay - Part Number 39T9647.

I've looked everywhere for directions on how to install the antennae but nothing so far. The red antenna might be for the LCD bezel and if so, I would rather not install it. However, from the reading I've done on this forum, the blue antenna is for the keyboard bezel so that's an easier proposition.

I need some advice on:

1. The best way to install the blue antenna assembly

2. Since the 5300 is using all three wires, I wouldn't mind swapping it back out for the 5100 leaving the white wire free. I should be able to use the white wire for the Main and blue antenna for the AUX on the F3507g. Is this correct?

Any help would be HUGELY appreciated!

I am not 'into' the antenna debacle, but isn't it that you either have a chassis that fits the 3 wires for the W-Lan OR a chassis that fits 2 wires for W-LAN AND 2 wires for W-WAN?

My understanding is that the x200 models can have 3 antennae (white, gray and black) for WLAN and 2 antennae (red and blue) for WWAN. I'm not an expert though.

The blue assembly that I have looks fairly easy to set up - I just need to know where in the chassis it should be attached.

All the antennas install in the LCD enclosure. See page 128 in the following:

I just upgraded the screen on my X200s, which I ordered with the same screen as the x200 wxga. I can verify that all four of the antennas were factory installed into the LCD enclosure. There was black tape wrapped around the wires to reinforce where the wires went through the hinge areas.

The black, gray (WiFi), white (BT) are all for 2.4Ghz band. The blue and red operates in the 1.9Ghz range are for EVDO, HSDPA. The antennae are different. The higher the frequency, the shorted the effective length of the monopole or dipole.

Hello I have the same problem :(
I bought an ericsson card F3507g from china, and they gave me also a "dummy" gps antenna to apply on it ( with one connector, just like the one here http://cgi.ebay.com/3G-WWan-antenna-4-M ... 2a0f3791e9 ).
I bought that card for a x200s which I believed it was wwan ready, since I saw the SIM slot, but I just realized it doesnt have nor the blue or red antennas mentioned in this thread, under the palmrest.

Now my question might sound a bit crazy.... what if i use the dummy chinese antenna for the MAIN of the F3507g and for the AUX I use the 3rd white antenna of the WLAN 5300 card...? would the GPS function be still usable? or I will risk to damage the card or something hardware related in the laptop because of the wrong frequency?

In few words I want to ask if i can take out the 3rd white cable from the WLAN 5300 card and connect it to the MAIN of the F3507g... and make the card work, with both WWAN and GPS.

thanks

PS. By the way...the dummy antenna should connect to the MAIN or AUX of the F3507g card?

UPDATE: I have just tried to detach the 3rd white cable from the WLAN card and put it on the MAIN of the F3507g and gladly it works! :) it gets the GSM connection well :)
i didnt even have to use that "dummy" chinese antenna...

Isn't the disembling of the laptops in the service training video's? I know for the X301 it shows the whole laptop taken apart including the aerials. You can then check which wires go where.
