Fn-F7 Switching Monitors on Win 7 RTM and x200T

#1 Post by Aristotle11 » Mon Sep 07, 2009 12:54 pm

Hi,

I use my X200t for a lot of presentations, and need to switch among many monitors and monitor resolutions constantly. The Presentation Director used to help with this (especially in tablet mode when I do not have access to Fn-F7), but at least I could open up the computer and press Fn-F7. Now, Windows 7 is pretty neat, since if it detects the same external monitor, it goes into a certain preset mode. However, this does not work for me since I give presentations with different settings in different rooms that use the same external monitor.

For example, in one room I max out the resolution for the external monitor and turn off the laptop's LCD, but in another I have the one resolution on both the laptop LCD and the external monitor, and in another room I have yet another resolution for both monitors. Presentation Director, and Fn-F7, allowed me to switch among these easily via either a keystroke or a simple mouse click. There seems to be no easy way to switch in Windows 7 (other than right clicking on the desktop, going to screen resolution, and clicking about a dozen buttons).

Is there any way to enable Fn-F7, or the presentation director, or a preset monitor setting in WIn7 that I can just pin to the desktop and click on to switch to a particular monitor setup? The Windows Key + P does not seem to help much for my needs.

Thanks,
Aris

PS- Win7 is weird with using 2 monitors. Sometimes I like to project 1280x800 (widescreen) on both monitors. Sometimes on the external non-widescreen monitor it stretches the screen picture like taffy up to fill the whole screen (and it looks a bit funny but works well for some presentations). Other times the external monitor just has black bars on top and bottom and looks just like the laptop's 1280x800 LCD (non stretched).

Also, sometimes I use 1024x768 for both monitors. Sometimes I get black bars on both sides of the laptop monitor, and sometimes it stretches to fill the entire laptop LCD.

How do I choose between "stretching up mode" and "non-stretched black bar mode"?

While Presentation Director isn't supported for 7, I have had some success in using it when Windows just can't seem to get the switching for external monitors right.
