T42 23733UU Bluetooth version & accompanying mouse?

#1 Post by acidreign » Thu Feb 10, 2005 4:42 pm

Hi all,

I have the T42 23733UU, and I want to buy a Bluetooth mouse for it. Now, I've heard that there are essentially two versions of Bluetooth, 1.1 and 2.0. How do I go about finding out which version I have.

I've heard that 1.1 isn't good because it interferes with wireless connections, so I'm hoping that my Thinkpad is 2.0.

Are there any 2.0 mice out on the market with multiple buttons, because the only one that I know of is the Apple one which, of course, only has 1 button.

Failing that, can anyone recommend a mouse? The only one that matches my Thinkpad (yeah I know), is the Thinkoutside one, which is nice and matte black.

Also, for anyone that uses a Bluetooth mouse, just how much does it interfere with wireless signals, since I use wifi both at school and at home.

Thanks!

Jeff

Logitech MX900

This seems to be the best mouse out there, there is a MS mouse(you will most likely have to restart and apply security updates, a firewall you dont want), but you want to get the Logitech and that mouse works in Linux.

Tiger Direct is the cheapest($69) or egghead...everyone else wants $100.

Does anyone know which version of bluetooth T42 uses, I am curious too.

T42's internal bluetooth is version 1.1.

I have Logitech MX900 (also only bluetooth 1.1). Bluetooth and WiFi on my T42 are on all the time. There are 3 other WiFi LANs around my apartment. I have been using it for months. Never ever noticed any interference - even during full speed file transfers.

Same holds for Microsoft bluetooth mouse 2.0 when I still had mine.

Which do you think is the better mouse? MX900 or MS Bluetooth 2.0?

I'd be interested in knowing how the response times are on the Logitech. I have a MS one but I'm not sure what revision it is and its response times aren't good enough for gaming. Then again, I'm used to a corded mouse though...

I am not sure what response time is, but getting mouse next week and I can tell ya how it ran under HL2.

I'd like to know how the MX900 feels too. I read a comparison of the MS and Logitech bluetooth mice and they mouserated the MS to around 50Hz and Logitech to around 80. http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-252-3.htm

But, I also found this: "Shortly after I put this page up, a helpful Chief News Editor/Hardware Reviewer from Got | Apex? e-mailed me to say that he'd Mouserate-d his Wireless Blah Blah For Bluetooth, and it scored "a fairly steady 90-110Hz rate", and seemed perfectly fine for gaming." at http://www.dansdata.com/danletters025.htm

What gives? Different versions of the MS intellimouse? Drivers?

I can add that I got the Think Outside Stowaway Bluetooth mouse about a month ago. It mouserates at 50Hz which I find slightly less than satisfying. A couple of days ago I lost connection with it and couldn't get it paired again so now it's lying in a drawer. It also has a small but annoying lag when you start moving it again after letting it rest for a few seconds (and that's not when it's gone and turned itself off, something it does after a few minutes in which case you have to press a button to wake it up).

What disturbed me the most though, was that I couldn't get used to the size. It's simply too small for me. I also got a serious delay when returning from the Fn+F12 mode. So at the moment the disadvatages of bluetooth mousing outweigh the geeky luxury of being completely cable free.

I'm thinking about the Logitech MX900 but it isn't exactly cheap so until I know for sure what I'm getting I think I'll stay corded.

Well, got the mx900 today and it works great. Did not install bluetooth hub on T42 since I have bluetooth, so did not install drivers.

I got it working in windows and linux. Good range, easy install and I think it is overpriced at $70 dollars, but in the long run it will worth since, I got no cords on laptop when running off batteries....

Not sure of "response time" or anything less than average gaming and using.

It is also pretty light to be cordless and feels good on the hand when using. I would give two thumbs not counting the price.

If anyone needs setup for Linux, just reply to post. The install for linux is basically this on Fedora:

Can only add device as root:

hidd scan //copy the bluetooth address
server bluetooth start //if not start
//push connect on mouse
hidd connect address

best I can do just remembering.
