Upgrading Operating System on x200s

#1 Post by giftedIP » Wed Sep 09, 2009 11:03 pm

I just recieved my brand new Thinkpad x200s (1440 x 900 LED Backlight) after waiting over a month! I ordered it with Windows Vista Business 64 and I want to upgrade it to Windows 7 Professional 64. I downloaded the Operating System (not the release candidate) through Microsoft's Alliance with IEEE. I don't have an external CD/DVD drive or the docking base, hence I have not made any backup disks as of yet. If I upgrade to Windows 7, will I need to obtain all the drivers and backup the thinkvantage software that came with the computer before I update the OS? In other words, will the update reformat the computer completely or simply retain all the original files, drivers, and thinkvantage software and just update the OS? I would greatly appreciate any insight from those who have upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows Vista.

I don't think system update works with Windows 7 yet. Maybe someone cares to correct me. If you save a copy of the SWTools folder on the C:\ drive, it will have all the apps and drivers installed on your machine. Vista software should be compatible with Windows 7.
