Laptop CPU's???

#1 Post by emeraldgirl08 » Thu Sep 10, 2009 1:35 pm

Off the top of anybody's head which manufacturers solder their CPUs to their laptops???

I know it's a somewhat broad subject but I'm sure there are pretty broad answers as well.

As a general rule you only see soldered CPUs these days on ultraportables like the X series.

My Gateway ARC200 has the chip soldered.
The HP DV2000 is socketed.

What is the logic behind soldering the CPU's to the board?

I'm asking b/c at the time my OP was written I had a little money to buy a P&R laptop. A look through Fleabay at the time had me wondering. I remembered reading that some Gateways had a special RAM and that in certain laptops the CPU's were soldered to the board. Those are the types of laptops I'd like to avoid. What were the manufacturers thinking??!!

Ever heard of Saving Dollars?
Those sockets are quite expensive, and a CPU hardly ever fails, so there's no need really for a socket for an average user.

Some ppl like myself love the advantage of upgrading the CPU. For example my R52 came with a 1.4 ghz PM. I upgraded that to a 1.86 Dothan PM. The CPU wasn't very expensive either. If I had this done by a professional I probably would have been charged a lot of money. It only takes a couple of minutes to do it also :)

I too love the ability to upgrade the cpu (as well as other components). In fact, when I purchase my next machine, upgradability will be a MAJOR factor.
