T61 won't boot when HDD in Advanced dock

#1 Post by jkeene01 » Thu Sep 10, 2009 9:30 pm

I hope this is the right place to post this question. I'm new, be kind.

I just bought an advanced dock for my T61, along with a SATA adapter and a 2.5" HDD. I actually bought them all three from Amazon, and they had them listed as "frequently bought together":

# This item: Lenovo ThinkPad Advanced Dock - docking station ( 250310U )
# Lenovo 40Y8725 Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter
# Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 2.5 Inch, 8 MB Cache, 5400 RPM SATA II WD5000BEVT

All is well until I slide the Hard Drive adapter (with the HDD in it) into the dock and try to boot. I can't get past the splash screen (I can't even get to the BIOS). I had the same problem with a friend's R400 in my dock.

I have taken the T61 (which I'm typing on as we speak) off the dock, booted into the BIOS, and eliminated every boot device besides the internal hard drive, thinking the dock's HDD might be showing up as a USB device). But that didn't help! And like I say, I can't even get to the BIOS when docked.

So then I tried taking the R400's HDD out and putting IT in the dock (he's a good friend). I thought maybe the WD500 was incompatible. But no dice with the R400 HDD either.

Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum.
Are you using the power cord with the dock? It won't work without it.
What happens if you take the CD/DVD out of your laptop and insert the SATA/HD combo in there?
(You'll need to enable the extra drive settings again in BIOS).

According to Lenovo: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 61232.html
Notes: * Ultrabay Enhanced second ThinkPad hard drive requires an Hard disk drive (HDD) installation kit.

Installation manual for SATA adapter: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... 0y8746.pdf
