bottom cover replacement
bottom cover replacement
I have a T30 on which the "cover base assembly" (bottom plastic shell) is cracked, and I want to replace it. I've already obtained a new cover base assembly, and I have the manual - now I'm just looking for a word of support and encouragement, because this job looks a bit hairy.
I assume the thing to do is follow the procedure in the manual for replacing the motherboard, which means first removing all the other assemblies listed as prerequisites. Basically the entire guts are going to come out and be dropped into the new bottom pan.
I'm no stranger to PC repairs, have the tools and patience for the job. Maybe I'm just wondering if others have done this and not hit any nasty surprises.

Re: bottom cover replacement
You are correct. Everything must be removed. As you look through the FRU removals in the maintenance manual, if you start with the systemboard removal then you are most of the way there. Take your time and mark the screws by which page in the manual they were removed by. Use an ESD wrist strap that is grounded. Use a #00 phillips. Good luck.

Harryc, thanks for the sanity check, it helps.

Re: bottom cover replacement
Make that a #1 Phillips. I have a #00 I used to work on my camera. It won't even catch on the ThinkPad case screws.Harryc wrote:...Use a #00 phillips...

I don't know where you get your screwdrivers, but a Sears 41649, which is a 0 x 2 1/2 " screwdriver (#0) is a perfect fit. The #1 is too big.

Re: bottom cover replacement
I only ever use a Phillips #0 screwdriver, can take any TP apart with it!

Re: bottom cover replacement
OK, I'll believe a #0 will work, but Harryc's message above says #00. I tried it -- it won't work.
