X60 lid switch

#1 Post by Moba » Sat Sep 12, 2009 8:51 am

I got a used X60 and the lid switch seems to be broken i.e. the LCD will not power off when the lid is closed (or do anything else regardless of the power manager settings).

I looked at the service manual and all I could find is that the switch is attached to the LCD cable assembly (a cable switch is mentioned on p. 97). I have no idea what to look for...

Hence, I'm guessing that the switch is a plastic piece mounted over the cable, but all I see is the yellow cable (with two contacts) in a small hole on the right side of the main LCD cable of the unit. The tab/switch part appears to be missing.

Basically, I need help on how to fix this and finding the correct part. :?

Thank you

I might be wrong, but I think the part you are talking about just holds the cable in place. I don't have an x60 apart right now to check, but I thought the x60 worked like the t60, where there was a little magnet in the keyboard bezel that tripped a magnetic switch on the inverter.

The switch (should look like a small black square with three leads coming out of it) is part of the LCD cable. It forks off to the side of the cable and should be attached to a small piece of substrate which has two notches cut into it (looks like an H on its side). That part of the cable is held in place with a small piece of double-sided tape on the base. The keyboard bezel has a section that will fit around it.

So the switch part should be all black (as per the pic on eBay)? I'm seeing an orange/yellow cable with something black through the hole - that doesn't look good. I guess I'll have to remove the bezel and the top to see what's wrong. I was hoping for an easy repair - I didn't expect to replace the whole cable :|

I removed the top and the H part was unglued. I put it back with a small piece of electrical tape but the switch still doesn't work (even with a magnet). It was worth a try.

I'll either leave it like that or replace the cable if I can find a cheap one ($60-$150 online = ouch!).

I cleaned the fan while I was in there, so it wasn't a total waste of time :P

Thanks again 8)
