z60M BIOS and Embedded Controller updates

#1 Post by mlkaplan » Sat Sep 12, 2009 1:30 pm

Cross-posted on the Lenovo forum...hope that's okay.

I recently wiped my hard drive and installed Windows 7 on my z60m. My BIOS was at 1.14, so I tried to update to 1.24. The instructions say to also update the Embedded Controller to 1.18, and that you should do the BIOS update first. I successfully updated the BIOS, but the Embedded Controller fails repeatedly, giving the "DeviceIoControl() returns 24" error.

I've now seen varying suggestions on the web that Lenovo's instructions are wrong, and that you should do the Embedded Controller update before the BIOS update. Unfortunately, it's too late for me. I tried to downgrade back to 1.14 so I could start over, but I got the same "DeviceControl() returns 24" error when I tried to do that.

So now I have BIOS 1.24 and Embedded Controller 1.14, with seemingly no way to change either of them. Is there any other way I can update the Embedded Controller? I don't have a floppy drive, so that's out. And if there is no way for me to do this, what are the ramifications of sticking with this configuration?

I would be terrified to update the bios or embedded controller under windows 7 or vista or any other os not certified for use on that model. Is there any chance you could find or borrow a USB floppy drive?

Things had actually gone pretty well up until now. The Vista drivers for pretty much everything in the machine worked with Windows 7, so I didn't think this would be a big deal. The reason I went after the BIOS update is because I am getting intermittent freezes that seem to have to do with the power management. Now of course I'm kicking myself for never having bothered to do this when I was running XP.

Is there any option for loading the EPC update from a CD? I do not have access to a USB floppy drive, nor do I feel like buying one. I do have a floppy drive on another machine, though, so I could conceivably burn something onto a disk, if that's possible.

Mlkaplan,

Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://tinyurl.com/9fhdl5 . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to check the threads available there for additional assistance.
