Yes, it is possible.

You need to get the Socket M Core2Duos. If you want to retain the current clocks, you will need:
Intel Core2Duo T5500 (1.66GHz)
Intel Core2Duo T7200 (2.00GHz)

a T/R60 handles up to T7600 (2.33GHz).

I'm not sure about the R-series but in T60, there are different fans for CoreDuo and Core2Duo CPUs. Refer to the R60 Hardware Maintenance Manual (Parts List) for more info.

Thanks yak
I check the manual and see the processors type and how to replace it.
But info about fan did not find any.
Now it may sound overconfident but if it is only to release the screw and replace the chip is very easy even if fan need to be replace that is out anyway so a little more easy.
What the catch work BIOS? Heat? price not if you buy use? how can is so simple?
And last please need help finding is fan need to be replace. I don't over-clock my machines at all.

Thank you

I've checked the manual, you don't need new fans, the ones you have will do.

So you just have to unscrew the fan, replace the CPU, apply some thermal grease like Arctic Silver 5 and reattach the fan.

If you have a fairly recent BIOS there should be no problem.

I wouldn't buy the fastest T7600 CPU as it is a bit expensive being the fastest Merom for Socket M. People say the T7200 is a sweet point.

If you're not going to run faster clocks, the average temps should stay as they are now. From the way you asked it seems like this is what you want, to get the 64bit capability.

One more thing. Be sure to get a CPU in mPGA package (with pins on the bottom) and not the BGA version (with pads). Note that there are some BGAs floating on eBay with pins soldered to the pads. You may want to avoid them as the reliability of this modification is questionable.

Won't work, that's an 800MHz bus C2D. Your max is 667MHz for the bus (and not all will necessarily work). T7600, T7400, T7200, (2.33, 2.16, 2.0GHz) all OK.

I had the T5200 in my R60e. It failed to boot. My guess would be you can only use the 667MHz FSB Core 2 Duos like the T5500 or T7400 for example. Your link is busted, but this is a good link to figure out which are socket M or P.

Thank you fred for the link also thanks for show me my mistake.
T5500 is what I am looking I can't see investing near what this two laptop cost only to have 64bit but so far the only good deal was a P socket the rest looking high I don't need a supersonic machine only 64bit.
Do you know how to spot when they are soldering, so far my guest is buy from someone who takes return and them look at when you receive it ?
well thanks

Typically, they only solder on ultraportables these days like the X series. I think it's very unlikely you'll get a CPU that's been soldered.

Fred thank you for this reassurance I am more confident now the I know my options I have seen a couple of good T7200 go for reasonable money and I hear from yak that is a sweet thing for many. Specially when you visit newegg and read what people say about it and they all happy, and now that the solder thing have come down I yet have to wait for the one for me I will definitely upgrade.

So Fred and all that help me Thank You so much I have learn a bit more this two days.

I usually tell people upgrade to a faster hard drive first. For most things, that's a better upgrade than the CPU. General usage stuff like office, music, internet, movies, etc., don't really push the CPU enough to where you'd notice a difference, but the better latency and faster throughput of a 7200RPM will be much more noticeable. Plus it doesn't void your warranty like a CPU upgrade will, if you care. Good Luck.

You read my mind. One of my R60 still on warranty and that was the first one I was to change processor but I am glad I am no rushing this time.
Let me explain to you why I am upgrading the reason is to keep up with mac OS X that all no performance I am very happy with that.
So improvement my machine is not my goal. Keep up is.
Now will have to rethink this move. Shoots.
