T41p screen swap question

#1 Post by madkat » Wed Sep 16, 2009 5:33 am

Used the search, but still not sure...
Here's the issue - a friend with a T41p model 2373-GEG - with 14'' 1400x1050 screen, got it broken... I only have a spare T41 1024x768 14'' complete lid.
He's from another town, and the only sollution is to send it by mail - but before i have to be sure it works on his machine...
So - will it work? with no other problem than the obvious lower resolution?

Thanks in advance - and sorry if it has been discussed already

X200 - P8600 2.66Ghz, 3G, 250G
G50-70 - 3558U 2.4Ghz, 4G, 1T

Yes. I replaced my 14.1in 1400x1050 T43p screen with a 14.1in 1024x768 T43 screen a few weeks ago and it worked perfectly. The only thing you should note is that T4Xp lids have a bluetooth antenna but the regular T4X lids do not. So you won't have bluetooth anymore. The T41's hardware maintenance manual gives detailed instructions on how to replace the lid.

Good luck 8)

Not all p models are BT equipped. Removing and replacing a BT antenna is fairly easy. This can be done without removing all the screws, just those on the left side and bottom.

While this is true, all of the T4x "p" models are bluetooth ready, with the antenna already in place. This is also true for any high-resolution T4x, regardless of the "p" suffix.

Well, it comes by itselves, if the Hardware Maintanence Manual is followed strictly, but anyway,
make sure that your friend in that 'another town', knows that all power must be removed from the system, before doing the lid swap.
That is, the battery also has to be removed before the operation.
Saying this is just to avoid any upcoming disputes and discussions on blown MB fuses.

None of my four T4x computers had the BT LED or were listed as BT-ready; three were 14" XGA models and one was a 15" SXGA+ model.

A couple of things here...

a) You will not find ANY T4x listed as "bluetooth ready", regardless of the fact whether it has the antenna installed or not.

b) When I wrote "high-resolution" I was referring to SXGA+ or higher. With XGA T4x units, BT antenna is a hit or miss. And I will guarantee you that the 15" SXGA+ one had the BT antenna hidden under the modem card.

c) When I say "BT ready" I'm referring to antenna being in place, and not to the clear plates bearing the BT symbol.

Hope this clears any fog that my previous post might have left behind...

That's probaly the case - the 15" SXGA+ and UXGA tops were likely a standard manufacturing run whereas the bottoms would differ from 'puter to 'puter.

update
screen fitted (of course the screws were the same etc.) - but the computer doesn't want to boot. At all. Not a series of beeps, not a blinking led...

what could be the problem (unfortunately the guy is from another town and i can't see for myself) - what can he try/test?

i've asked him to do some tests - and the machine behaves as follows:
with the old screen (bad inverter, or anyways it doesn't matter since he opened the lid up, and somehow f**ed the whole display up...) the machine sometimes boots into windows (thing shown on external display), and sometimes doesn't until he jiggles the connector...
with the screen i've sent him - the machine does nothing, doesn't power up, but doesn;t produce any beeps.
without any screen also it doesn't even power up (from what i've read here it should)

To me it seems like GPU or some motherboard/fuse failure. Could a short on the inverter supply line (on the MB) cause the machine only to boot with a broken inverter? Or is plain and simple typical T4x GPU failure?

hmm, checking the gpu is a good idea. If all else fails, he could buy a used t41p from ebay and swap the hard drives.

A few questions for clarity:
* Did he try to replace only the screen or the entire lid?
* Did he put the old screen/lid back on after the new one didn't work? What happened?
* Would it be possible for your friend to post here?
