Win7 Boot Loader and Linux GRUB questions

#1 Post by sojourner » Wed Sep 16, 2009 7:26 am

Read a lot of forum comments where some people are using GRUB to boot Win7. Was wondering how you do it!

This system is setup with the Win7 Boot Loader appearing with choices for Win7, XP, Ubuntu, Win98 (don't laugh, I use it a lot!!). Works well but GRUB offers greater features and flexibility as a boot manager. Can someone tell me how to get GRUB to boot Win7?

And lastly, does GRUB display Win7's Boot Loader or boot directly into 7 (I'd prefer the latter).

Thanks

multi-boot (98SE, W2K, XP PRO, Win7, Linux Mint 10)

I believe this should give you an idea.

I believe this is usually a setting that is manageable from within Linux, but the above utility should also provide you with such an option.

Hope this helps,

here's the /boot/grub/menu.lst that I use:
boots the x31 directly into either linux or 7

default 0
timeout 3
color cyan/blue white/blue
#
title 2.6.26-2-686
root (hd0,2)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.26-2-686 root=/dev/hda3 ro quiet vga=790
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.26-2-686
#
title win_7
root (hd0,0)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1
the way up and the way down are the same (heraclitus)

hmmm, looks familiar; think I've used this for booting into XP. Would you know if the syntax is the same for XP & 7 except for the 'root' entry? On this system XP is on HDD0 drive 'C', thus root (hd0,0). Win7 would be on drive 'K', thus root (hd0,8). Do you know if this scheme will work to boot XP and 7 independently?
