When you haven't used a ThinkPad in a loooooooooooong time, yet you keep coming back here after periods of inactivity (last here in June!), keep defending ThinkPads against haters, and wonder what Ray is up to. lol...

I like ThinkPads enough that I have them not only in my home and at work, but also in my car! Here's a picture, for those interested.

Agreed, and while having extra batteries around, it's not a good thing to keep them in the fridge. The moisture is not a good thing for modern day batteries like it was for the old kinds of C D and AA models.DomiNick wrote:I have only one Thinkpad but sometimes I feel like an addict. I am a heavy user and I spent hours and hours on my Thinkpad. So I am maybe not one of the really bad addicts but I would consider myself an advanced beginner
There's enough problem with fires without adding to it by storing them inappropriately. I'm betting the OP wouldn't mention the storage method should he return a unit for repair after using one.
As for my You know you're a Thinkpad addict when: You use them at work and at home and your Thinkpad at home is a W700ds.

Re: You know you're a die-hard Thinkpad addict when...
I've stopped putting batteries in the fridge! I noticed moisture when the batteries came to room temperature and figured that it wasn't a good idea. The condensation also took forever to disappear so... not a good idea!
I'm still loving my two remaining Thinkpads I have and have experimented with AVI transcoding on my R51e. The result wasn't too shabby. The laptop did not get extremely hot and the fan did not come on loud enough to send me in a panic. I think my expertise
in thermal compound application, raising the rear of the laptop, and keeping my fans clean helped with heat dissipation
I did not notice an intake exhaust anywhere on my laptop like previous Thinkpads but figured the more air circulating under the laptop the cooler it would be.
oh and Gburnore...lol I'd like to be referred to as "she." Thanks.

Second a tip. If you DO get moisture in/on your battery, buy a bag of rice and stick the battery in it for a day or so. Like putting rice in your salt shaker, the rice attracts the moisture away.

Thanks for the rice/battery recipe! I would not even have thought of that if you hadn't mentioned it! Have a good nite

Curious what are you doing with that little X in your car? I understand the law enforcement angle but I can't think of too much else. I have been known to use mine for maps now and then before the GPS investment.
Re: You know you're a die-hard Thinkpad addict when...
I use it with MS MapPoint 2009 for GPS/navigation (MapPoint also does trip planning, fuel economy, etc). I have an OBDII to USB cable connected to it, so it provides and logs data from a number of sensors in the car. I also use it to listen to music.proaudioguy wrote:Curious what are you doing with that little X in your car? I understand the law enforcement angle but I can't think of too much else. I'm extremely well rounded with the T4x series, but I doubt I could do it blindfolded.underclocker wrote:You know you're a die-hard Thinkpad addict when...
...when you can completely disassemble and reassemble a particular model ThinkPad without consulting a Hardware Maintenance Manual or even a pause in your work or a mistake - and with no left over parts. I suppose there were earlier indications, but that's certainly a confirmation. I can practically tear down and rebuild a T4x or R5x machine blindfolded.

I'm not an addict, I can quit anytime I want... I think...

And I have struck up conversations with other ThinkPad users about their machines. However, only 1/3 seem to know much about the quality of computer they actually have.

When you'd rather have a WorkPad C505 than a cheaper Palm m515 with twice the RAM because it looks better with the ThinkPad?

When you buy Thinkpad parts because, "I might use that someday" even though you don't currently have a system that it'll work with.
