T42 Win98SE, no audio with the official drivers
T42 Win98SE, no audio with the official drivers
I speak english so so.
I buy the old T42 with XP. I have made many tests and everything worked perfectly.
Then I installed W98 with the official drivers
www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-55386
All work perfectly but NO AUDIO. When I install driver of audio: "no find audio driver". In control panel - system audio with "yellow spot". I installed the audio driver in various ways but none has worked.
Computers are my passion for years and then avoided the classic questions for the inexperienced.

Re: T42 Win98SE, no audio with the official drivers
Did you run the setup.exe (in c:\drivers\win\...) or just look for the driver using Control Panel driver update?
In order to avoid questions for the inexperienced, it will be good for you to detail the "various ways" you tried.

Re: T42 Win98SE, no audio with the official drivers
It looks like there two versions of drivers, one for Win98 and another one for Win98SE. Make sure you have the correct one.
Here you reviewed the installation instructions? Once a driver had been installed, you need to uninstall the non-working driver before reinstalling the driver again.
Here it is the instruction attached:
Installation Instructions
-------------------------
This driver can be installed with the ThinkPad Software Installer, or
by following the instcructions in the next section.
In both cases, please confirm that the driver is correctly installed,
by determining the installed driver version as described below.
Clean installation:
1. Start Windows and log on with the user ID authorized as
an administrator for Windows 2000/XP.
2. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive.
3. Click Start, then click Run.
4. Type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE in the Open box and click OK.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
6. Click Finish and Reboot the system when prompted in order to
complete the installation.
Upgrading or reinstall:
NOTE: Remove any previously installed driver using the uninstall step
in the next section.
5. If the dialog box appears, select Reinstall or Update and then
click Next.
6. Click Finish to reboot the system and complete the installation.
Unattended installation (Windows 2000/XP):
NOTE: This is for system administrators' use only.
In the step 4. of the Clean Installation procedure type
C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\SETUP.EXE -S -SMS in the Open box and click OK.
Uninstalling the driver
1. Start Windows 2000/XP and log on with the user ID authorized as
an administrator.
2. Depending on the operating system choose one of the following
paths:
a. If Windows 98SE/2000, Click Start, select Settings, and
then click Control Panel.
b. If Windows XP, Click Start, then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
4. Click SoundMAX, then click Change/Remove (or Add/Remove).
5. Select Remove or OK, then click Next or OK.
6. Click Finish or OK and reboot the system to fully uninstall the
drivers.

W98 or W98SE has not been supported for years.
Also, your laptop is too new for W98 (resp. W98 is too old) to still work.
Put Windows 2000 or XP back on, and all your problems will have gone away.

Re: T42 Win98SE, no audio with the official drivers
To be fair, if IBM still make the drivers available for Win98 for that model, then it should be able to be fixed.
But I'd have to echo the "why?"
Nicola, I would guess there are not going to be too many folk here running any version of 98 to even try & replicate the fault (pauses for heaps of "actually, I run W98 on my T500" replies...no?), so any replies are going to be from a "theoretical" or "memory" view. If the majority of my computer kit wasn't on the other side of the planet, I'd throw a 98 disc into a T42 just to see...
Exactly which build and how did you arrive at it? Clean install from a genuine CD? Have you installed the "base" drivers (chipset, etc). I vaguely recall version updates being especially problematic around drivers back then.
Then have you followed the instructions posted earlier to ensure any incorrect drivers are removed and the correct one installed.

Re: T42 Win98SE, no audio with the official drivers
You know, there is quite a large group of people working to keep Win98SE as viable and up-to-date an operating system as possible. See here:
http://www.msfn.org/board/windows-9x-me ... s-f91.html
But, still, I have to ask why? I'm not disrespecting your decision, just curious about what Win98SE has to offer that a newer OS does not.

Native support of DOS applications...
But the question "What Win98SE has to offer to a Thinkpad T42 that a newer OS does not" is one that I have no answer to.

Ciao Nicola!
I'm also quite curious why are you trying to install Win98!
If it's about old DOS games, try using DOSBox. It works very well with WinXP and Linux.
cheers!

If this is the reasong maybe he can try to run a DOS emulator, I recall there are some products available for NT and following OS. There also FreeDOS, but I have no experience with it.Neil wrote:Native support of DOS applications...

Re: T42 Win98SE, no audio with the official drivers
I see you're so passionate about computers, but why show the love to Windows98SE?
I mean, it was a good OS, as a matter of fact it was my first OS back when I bought my first laptop, but I don't see the benefits of using it if you're a casual PC user, unless as stated above you really need the 'native' MS-DOS support.
Didn't your machine came preinstalled with some sort of XP version?

Re: T42 Win98SE, no audio with the official drivers
It appears v5 software does not support W98SE on T42x (or am I reading the chart wrong):
- ThinkPad R40
- ThinkPad R50(*1), R50e(*1), R50p(*1), R51(*1)
- ThinkPad T40, T40p(*1), T41, T41p(*1), T42, T42p(*1)
- ThinkPad X31, X32(*1)
- ThinkPad X40 (*1)
NOTE: *1: Only Windows 2000 and Windows XP are supported.
Try using version 4.11
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-41947
I use W98SE on a T41 and X31 (see sig); v4 audio drivers work just fine. You should be good with v4 too. The setup here was installed years ago but just checked the version and it's v4. And if the ol' recollection is right, I too tried v5 software and it did not install on a T41.
One other note; I'd be sure to uninstall all v5 software including INF file. You may even have to boot into safe mode (repeatedly tap F8 after BIOS Splash screen). Once in safe mode go to device drivers, audio, remove any errant devices.
Don't know if v4 software will install in safe mode but I'd give it a try while you are there.
Let us know how you make out!

Thank you very much sojourner! You are my savior. With v4 audio works. Unfortunately, in some sw feels really low. In addition there are not the excellent energy-saving features of the five.
I would contact Lenovo to let you know that the five does not work. How it works? How can I contact Lenovo really?

One other item comes to mind; if I recall that software installs a number of drivers (e.g. systray icon for something ) which I disable. You can try running MSCONFIG (Start, Run, MSCONFIG) and look for drivers you may want to disable. It's easy to re-enable later.
Hmmm, didn't think any energy saving features were included with any audio software!Nicola wrote:In addition there are not the excellent energy-saving features of the five.
