X41 black screen on closed lid after remote desktop
X41 black screen on closed lid after remote desktop
Hi all,
I remote desktop into my X41 with the lid closed (in "do nothing" mode when closing the lid). I have XP Pro SP3 installed.
After exiting remote desktop on the host, and opening the lid of my X41 (the server), the screen is black, and nothing I have tried gets it back (except rebooting). The only trick I've stumbled on is to use the Logmein remote control program. Once I've logged on via the Logmein site, the screen comes back.
So, I do have work-arounds, but if anybody happens to know the solution to this mystery, I would be grateful.
Regards,
Robert

Robert:
Have you tried Fn+F3 Fn+F4 to go into standby, followed by Fn to wake up again? This will sometimes reset the video and, if it works, save you from needing to reboot.
This would most likely be a display driver bug...
Edited to correct error.

Re: X41 black screen on closed lid after remote desktop
Hi Mark,
Thanks for the suggestion.
Yes I have tried doing Fn+F3 before closing the lid, to see whether Fn+F3 would bring the screen back after opening the lid. No success.
By the way, I do have the latest video driver installed.
I could forget about closing the lid altogether, but the X41 actually controls a remote observatory of mine with the roof open on occasion and the laptop exposed to the sky...

Fn+F4 is Standby and Fn+F3 is just to blank the screen, which is what you want to do if you want to keep the PC alive.
In any case, both the Power Manager and the Presentation Director has some control over your screen. Also, do you have Windows password set when returning from Standby/screen-off? If so, you may want to remove that.
If you don't need the Presentation Director, you may want to uninstall it. If you need the computer on all the time, just leave the LCD cover open and only use the LCD off timer to reduce wear on the backlight.

Hi Mark,
Happened to see your correction and tried Fn+F4. Indeed, the X41 reacts and goes into sleep mode with a beep, and Fn+F4 then managed to wake it up with the screen returning (login comes on with a lower resolution, then the resolution snaps back to its original setting)!
Terrific, thanks a lot. I had fired away at the keyboard before but never tried just sleep and wake-up.
