Sometimes the screen goes really weak and I can hardly make out what is going on. Its like there is no back light.

When you first turn the unit on does the screen have a red tint? If so you likely need a new LCD (backlight).

A lot of T21s have a bad LCD cable which will cause the problem you describe.

I'm having about the same problem. At first it would occassionaly be very dim (not completely blank) at start up or when I was coming off stand by. But I few tugs at the LCD back and forth would do the trick. Then it got worst and required several minutes of tugging at it to get it to work. Now it's completely blank. I don't mind trying to fix it myself. But I would hate to buy parts that either I don't need or that don't solve the problem. When it was working, there wasn't anything wrong with the display. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time.

Specs:

T21 2647-4au
800mhz
256mb Ram
20GB HD
DVD
14" display

A lot of 4AUs end up with a bad cable. Cables are around $30 so it is a great place to start and there is a decent (maybe 80%) chance it will fix your problem.

Before you do anything take the keyboard off and make sure the LCD cable is seated correctly. It will only take a minute.

There is a chance it could be the LCD and a tiny chance it could be the system board and a very tiny chance it could be the inverter. (T2* inverters seem to last forever...)

Of course, I am assuming everything is seated correctly throughout the unit.

Even after all of your quick checks you will likely need an LCD cable. They only last so long. :D

Thank you for you reply. Well, I made sure everything was seated properly and then gave it a go once I got it back together. Good and bad news. The good is now I can see the faint image in the background, the bad news is that it still doesn't work right. I'll try changing the cable. I see them on a popular auciton site (don't know if I can name names of companies or not) for around $35 with shipping. Is that a reasonable price? Once again thanks for the help.

that's a reasonable price. And, yes, please "name names", as it will help others who need to get the same in the future.

Ok, here's the update. I ordered the lcd cable for $33 with shipping off of eBay. It arrive 3/2 and I installed it right away. I wasn't expecting it to solve the problem, this way I wouldn't be disappointed. So I get everything back together and then power it on. Every second feels hours and then I can see it booting up. Wow I can't believe that it worked on the first replacement part try. Thanks for the help guys.
