showing sound and brightness on screen

Hi, when I bought my x41 each time I increased/decreased the brightness or the volume a metre showed up at the bottom of the screen.

I have now carried out a custom installation and these controls no longer show up. Can someone please tell me which program it is that I must install for it to show up.
