What cable are you using? It has to be coax...not toslink. Also, what machine are we talking about here? What OS?

Digital coax cable to coax/toslink converter to toslink. Machine is a 2007-64U T60 running XP Pro.

Go to control panel>sounds and audio devices>advanced>advanced, should be two boxes, check "enable SPDIF"

I don't use XP any longer. In XP, you should go to control panel>sounds and audio devices>[Tab]Audio->Sound plackback->Default device

It is a drop list where you should find the the optioin:Digital Audio (S/PDIF). Set it as the Default device and there you go.
Core 2 Duo T7600, 3GB DDR2-667 RAM, Main 7K320 320GB 7200RPM + Ultrabay 320GB 5400RPM, ATI FireGL V5250, 15" IPS UXGA, DVDRW, Bluetooth, Atheros ABGN, NMB Keyboard, Fingerprint, Win7 Pro X86 + Vista 64-bit SP2, Advanced Dock.

SPDIF is not listed there. Must be an XP driver issue.

Just wanted to update. It seems that with XP you just plug-in the cable and go. Just remember to enable S/PIF pass-through in whatever decoder you're using. :)
