Which Drive Should I get? 80GB IBM vs. 80GB Toshiba

#1 Post by ludu35 » Fri Feb 11, 2005 2:58 pm

hi all,
I have an option to get either:

Toshiba 80GB 5400rpm 16MB cache OR
IBM 80GB 5400rpm 8MB cache

Can anyone please tell me which one should I get or which one is the best for my T42? Thank you all.
LD
* Cost is the same on those two drives

If you do a search of the forum, I think you will find the Toshiba is kind of loud and that the 16MB cache doesn't really help out much. That said, I would go for the IBM. (Assuming you can't get a hold of the 60GB 7200rpm -- or need the storage)

I would stay away from the Toshiba.

You could try the brand new 5K100 80GB from hitachi at 5400rpm. It's faster compared to the current 5K80's and uses significantly less power. Zipzoomfly has it...

Hi,
Stay away from Toshiba drives.
I have a secondary Panasonic Toughbook where I installed a 30Gig 5400 RPM Toshiba drive. The drive has always been loud and slow, and after three months of use had some bad blocks. Now that I have a Western Digital Scorpio 40Gig 5400 ( I use the laptop as a P2P client i.e. it runs continuously; it has no fans), the drive is just totally silent, feels much faster, no bad blocks and the like.
I did some research on several forums, people have reported same stuff.

Glad I found this, haven't been able to find much about the Scorpio drives other than this article http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storag ... orpio.html that doesn't discuss noise/heat/vibration at all. My X31 is pretty sensitive to that it seems and didn't like the 7K60 at all !
