T400s speakers problem

#1 Post by vkanev » Sat Sep 26, 2009 1:06 pm

I got my T400s a week ago but until now I didn't notice that the laptop's speakers do not work. When I plug external speakers or headphones they work fine. First I thought that this is a Linux related problem (I use Ubuntu Linux), but when I booted Vista I was not able to make the speakers work. The Vista software detects correctly when I plug in external speakers/headphones. The laptop's speakers are reported "connected" in Vista, but no sound comes out of them.

Is it possible this to be a software/driver problem or I should return the laptop to the seller for replacement?

Hehe, it is good that I'm not alone, but I hope that this will be a software/BIOS/drivers problem. Today I talked to the Lenovo reseller and they said that if they have to replace the mainboard it may take up to 3 weeks. First they have to send my mainboard to Lenovo for an inspection and after that they will receive the replacement board.

The speakers stopped working on my T400s as well (although if I held the laptop right up to my ear, I could hear them very very faintly). I sent it back to Lenovo service, they replaced the speakers, and everything is ok now.

How long did you have your T400s before they stopped working? I had mine for 3 month now and so far so good, knock on wood...

About two weeks, I think.

I really want to buy a T400s, but these random shutdowns and now speaker problems are not a very good sign. Think Lenovo dropped the ball on this one, problem is there's not much else to pick from on the 14inch and thin category.

If you need some positive encouragement, I bought mine the day it came out and it's been perfect.

Thanks! that's good to hear!..and I understand that obviously most people will post when they have issues and there's probably 10x more people with no issues who don't post.....but its always a bit scary on these new models. Kind of like buying a first year car.

Bear in mind that the vast majority of T400s owners dont bother to post and say how happy they are with their laptops. Only people with problems tend to post on internet forums, so you're getting a bit of a skewed picture if you're just relying on what you read here.

I have a same problem on my T 400s, it is a 10 days old computer and 6 days go speakers went silent. Model is 2801-CTO, OS - Windows XP SP3. I've tried to upgrade BIOS and Audio drivers, nothing worked. I've run PC-Doctor test for speakers it seems sound coming out only from right one. Tech guy at Lenovo's partner service center told me that it's normal cause during this test speakers work in mono mode, but I'm really doubt it. Same guy told that is not a hardware but software problem and adviced me to restore Windows to the point where speakers were working.

I can hear the low battery alarm but not Windows sounds...

Did anybody fix this problem? How did you do this?

Well my 1 day old t400s has this problem, and im pretty sure it just came like that. I called Tech support today, they wanted to send it to repair....a 1 day old laptop? No thanks. I told them i did not feel comfortable sending a 1 day old laptop for repair so i asked about either returning it and getting a new one or getting my money back. They told me to call Sales tomorrow (since its closed now) and talk to them and give them my support ticket number in case they ask.

Anyone had luck returning the laptops?...very disappointed. And to think I almost did not buy this laptop because i was afraid this would happen (...or random shutdowns that seem to be another problem). Should have gone with my gut.....now I just hope they dont give me a hard time returning it.
