My wireless card stopped working

I have an IBM T40 Thinkpad model 2373, with an internal Intel Pro/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter, running Win XP Pro SP3. This computer was working fine, accessing the net wirelessly via my neighbor’s access point, which he disposed of, and which is why I had to set up my own. That’s when it stopped working.

I installed a D-Link DIR615 wireless router. Using it as a wireless access point, other laptops in my house work fine. But the IBM’s internal adapter no longer works. I have a feeling I messed it up when I was fiddling with the settings during installation of the router, and have been unable to undo whatever it was that I did.

The computer detects my network, but when I try to connect, it only goes as far as “Waiting for IP configuration”. Then a red X appears, and it goes no further.

I have 2 “plug-in” adapters, one that goes into the PCMCIA slot, and another that goes into the USB port. Both of these work fine, connecting via my new router. I thought the Intel adapter itself had become damaged, so I installed a new one (an exact replacement), but the same problem exists.

I took the computer to Office Depot, where the tech guy tried unsuccessfully for almost an hour to get it to work. Unfortunately, he was not familiar with IBM Access Connections, which I believe is where the problem lies.

I’ve been using the plug-in adapters since the trouble began, but would really like to get back to the internal Intel adapter.

Welcome to the Forum.
Very simple. Your router works in the G-band, and your old wifi-card works in the B-band.
Replace your wifi-card with b/g card and you're back in business.
An Intel 2200BG or 2915ABG will do fine. Try and find one with an IBM FRU or P/N on it.
You'll also need to update the wifi drivers when you replace the card.

Upgrading to a newer card is best.

But your router should have a b+G mode. Usually in this case, it will slow down the overall speed of your WiFi network.

Yep, I checked the router page from D-Link and it is compatible with 802.11b devices.

It might have worked with the neighbour if he set it up or allowed unencryption. Sounds like a router configuration issue (without having more info).

XIVth Command: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wifi!

Check the settings in another PC or laptop, and modify the T40 to reflect same.
But I assume any encryption above WEP is too much for that old card.
Download/Install Netstumbler on the T40, and see if that finds your router.
