T43 LCD question

#1 Post by jheis » Thu Oct 01, 2009 4:47 pm

What would be the likely problem with a T43 that has an LCD that "only stays on for a minute then dies?'

I've got a dead T42 (motherboard I think) with a good LCD & there is a T43 available locally with the above problem & I'm thinking of picking it up & swapping in my good LCD - if that is, indeed, the problem.

Does the external VGA port continue to work. If the external monitor works, there is higher likelihood that the backlight is going out.

Don't know.

It was on ebay & went for more than I was willing to pay for a broken thinkpad on spec.

I've got exactly the same problem : my "LCD only stays on for a minute then dies"
And my "external monitor works" (using it right now).

So I've got a backlight problem ? Can I fix that easily ?

Thanks !!!

OK I've just disabled PowerPlay in the ATI Catalyst Control Center (CCC) and I've been happily using my Laptop LCD for about 30' ... so it looks like this is fixed for now :)

It's very hard to tell whether problems are due to the backlight or its inverter. Someone wrote very good instructions on how to replace an inverter. Or you can just replace the whole lid...

Thanks for the advice ... I actually didn't want to spend too much time/money on fixing that and bought a cheap WSXGA+ Dell Latitude D810 as a replacement ... it's an OK machine but I wish it could be as quiet as my old T42P ...

The Backlight was dead. I gave the T42P to my cousin and he could fix it by taking a Backlight from an older LCD :)

I have a similarly broken T42 right now with that symptom. Since the screen is pink before it dies, I know it's a backlight problem. If your screen is pink then you have your answer.

Lots of thinkpads (10+) but I would never be so stupid as to list them all because that would spam everybody's searches and people who *do* try to list them all would be jerks.
