another sound problem but this one is a test for the PROS!!
Thanks guys for adding me in!!
I have a ibm z60t with a pentium processor and vista 32 bit os. the problem is that the sound is not working. everything seems to be working(sound drivers, speaker icon, playback devices) when i go to youtube for example the lower right speaker icon shows that thier is sound(graph going up and down). but when i try to lower the volume from the volume keys the lower right graph doesnt go down! even the mute key doesnt work. could that be the problem??? does the upgrade to vista mess up the sound driver? thanks guys.

thank you. no the head jack doesnt work.
Re: another sound problem but this one is a test for the PROS!!
Load up a Linux Live CD and check sound. If sound works on Linux, you have a Vista/driver problem on your hands. If it still doesn't work then begin to suspect hardware.

Re: another sound problem but this one is a test for the PROS!!
I'd vote for using a bootable PC Doctor for DOS diagnostic program. They are simple to make if you have a CD burner and program that can handle the .ISO format, which you need to have if are going to be fooling around with a Linux LiveCD anyway. The diagnostic program is available here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 56222.html
Boot the system with the CD and under the Interactive heading, there should be a test for the speakers. When executed, it generates a tone which can be controlled by using the up and down arrows. As a bonus, that diagnostic program can also check out other systems in the laptop.

ima try the linux download. please bare with me that im new to linux and the whole os download. this laptop is a fixer upper and i currently dont have a optical drive. is their a way to download linux straight from their website like the link that u gave me?
Re: another sound problem but this one is a test for the PROS!!
If you don't have an optical drive/CD burner then neither Linux or PC-Doctor will work for you. They both are .iso files that must be burned as an image to a Cd. Do you have a diskette drive?
Re: another sound problem but this one is a test for the PROS!!
Most Linux distros can be installed on a virtual machine without an optical drive. And some ditros offer a Windows installer, where you can mount the iso in a virtual CD-ROM and install from there. It will use the built in Windows boot manager to offer the choice of operating systems on boot. I don't have much experience with these methods, but I do have Win2k and GeeXboX installed on my 600X using the Windows installer method. Didn't have to use an optical drive when I set it up.
Check this out:
Install any Linux distro directly from hard drive with an optical drive.

im tryn to do neils method and it askes me to get "The first thing you will have to do is copy the ISO file(s) of the Linux to your hard disk (ofcourse, you already have it)." this is the first step. how do i do this?
Re: another sound problem but this one is a test for the PROS!!
If you go to the Linux Mint website that Harryc posted, you will find a "Direct download" link there. Click it and save the .iso file to your harddrive. Note that it's several hundreds of megabytes so the download may take a while depending on your internet connection.karrar55 wrote:im tryn to do neils method and it askes me to get "The first thing you will have to do is copy the ISO file(s) of the Linux to your hard disk (ofcourse, you already have it)." this is the first step. how do i do this?

how can i open lst files? neils method tells me to "Open c:\boot\grub\menu.lst" to modify it.
Re: another sound problem but this one is a test for the PROS!!
I think i found the problem. when i go to cp, click hardware and sounds, then click playback tab their is a list of two things. first is a speaker icon and beside the icon, it says
High defenition audio device
not plugged in
the second icon is a digital output device and beside it, it says
digital output device (spdif)
high definition audio device
working
do you guys think the speakers icon saying not plugged in is the problem?
