Wireless slow on battery. Power management?

#1 Post by crispinb » Sun Oct 04, 2009 12:30 am

I've noticed that my built-in wireless (Atheros mini pci I think) is dramatically slower when on battery; often painfully slow. The battery itself is fine. And the problem is really responsive to power: eg. a site can be trickling down on battery, and I plug in the power adaptor, and suddenly, bam, the site loads instantly.

Anyone know if there might be a power management setting for wireless that could be kicking in or something? I can't find one, either in anything supplied by Windows or in the Thinkvantage Power Manager stuff.
Cheers,
CB.

In device manager right click on the card and hit properties. There should be a power managerment tab.

Thanks. Found it and turned power saving mode off, and I haven't experienced the network slowdown on battery since (so far). It's a very oddly aggressive approach to power management to make the network adapter virtually useless!

For anyone else with the same issue, on 'advanced' tab of the property sheet (from Device manager), there's a 'Power Save Mode' option. I turned this off.

CB.
