T42P: move Hibernation file to different partition?

#1 Post by Marc_G » Sat Feb 12, 2005 3:55 pm

Hi folks-

Happy new owner of a T42P here. Though an experienced Thinkpadder, I've still got lots of questions on my new baby. I'm researching them before asking, but still a few questions are making it through.

Can the hiberfil.sys hibernation file be set to use a different partition? I don't want that 1.5 GB taking up space on my system partition, which I want to be able to fit as a backup image on a single DVD.

For the first time in a many years, I actually have a use for the hibernation feature, so I've left it enabled. Haven't done that since I had a Micron laptop circa 1997. But since I often use the 9-cell battery, and have to remove the battery to get the laptop into my bag, I see that my normal routine of Standby won't always work. When I'm local I'll just use the 6-cell battery, but for long flights the 9-cell is a requirement.

On the old Micron I had a separate partition set up, where just the hibernation file and nothing else lived. I don't see any settings for this on the Thinkpad, at least not yet.

Any thoughts here?

Along the same lines, is there any reason not to move the page file over to a different partition? This is easy to do but what happens if for some reason I wind up booting in an environment where the other partition isn't available (disaster recovery scenario)?

Thanks

Marc

One other note about this: sure I can temporarily disable hibernation right before doing backups, to accomplish my goal (did it last night, for example), but I'm looking for a more elegant solution.

TIA

They say you cant move the hibernation file, but you can move your pagefile.
Hope this is of any use.
