T61 freezes and doesnot boot

#1 Post by Thinkpaduser123 » Mon Oct 05, 2009 2:28 pm

I have been using T61 for 2 years now and I am pretty satisfied with the overall performance. In the last couple of days, I faced a strange problem: (under Windows Vista Business)

I was watching a video and suddenly my laptop freezed. Upon reboot, the BIOS shows a two windows (by splitting the screen horizontally) and I see the same content in both the windows. I selected Windows to load and it prompted for safety check. I selected the option and it took me to PC Doctor. I rebooted several times (even selecting Linux) and it shows the same split screen and doesn't boot. The last time I selected to boot Windows without doing safety check and shows "blue screen" with Parity check error. I did the hardware check with PC doctor and it says everything is fine.

I am not sure at this stage what step to take further. Probably, I might not prefer to recover the complete OS from pre-desktop area (assuming that it is a OS problem) as I have some content and software which are precious. I also found my laptop getting extremely hot recently. I suspect there might a fan failure too.

Has anyone faced the same problem before? What do you suggest my next action should be? (I am out of warranty recently).

Graphics card is: nVidia 140M

It is hard to diagnose from a distance, but the most likely problem is a motherboard failure, related to the nvidia graphics chip.

While I have not seen the exact same issue with a nVidia GPU failure similar issues I have seen were resolved when the motherboard was replaced sorry to say.
