T40p, LCD backlighting unit flourecent light replacement

#1 Post by synergy » Mon Oct 05, 2009 6:54 pm

I had a chance to compare my old T40p with the newer notebook and I realized how dark my T40p LCD looked sitting next to the newer one.

The LCD in its max brightness level isn't too bright except the initial powering up state which is almost like the bightness has turned to its minimum level but it gradually gets brighter in a few minutes.
There is no reddish or pinky hue but the white page looks old ivory but not snow white.
It gets expecially tougher when I'm watching Youtube on a bright sunny day.

It's just that it doesn't have that brilliant eye stressing 'wow' factor that comes with a brand new notebook these days.
I've read comments somewhere that it could be due to either the aging flourecent light or the inverter.
Which one would you recommend that I replace it first?
I've seen others doing the flourecent light transplant. Also, some ebay sellers are selling the flourecent tubes for T40's. I'm tempted to try it for myself.
Does it really get much brighter with the tube replacement?

Yes it does get brighter. But the CCFL replacement is a PITA job. It is easier it you have a broken (cracked) LCD of the same type. But then you are getting a used CCF that may not be much better than your old one.
