computer to slow after update????

I updated my ibm thinkpad z60t from xp to vista os and its very slow! like if i would to open documents it would take a while to open and starting up the laptop would take 10 minutes! i have 512mb ram and 75 gb hard drive! im think of getting a 320 gb hard drive and 2 gb ram to speed up the laptop! do you guys think it will make it fater if i upgrade the ram and hard drive? any tips on making it faster!

Going to 2Gb of RAM and a faster HDD would be a good start. I'm not certain I'd even run XPP/SP3 on a regular basis with 512Mb of RAM, so certainly not Vista. I'd also go through and double check all my drivers as well to make certain that you have the latest Vista complaint versions.

probably a "dumb question" but when i install the hard drive and ram do i have to do some kind of software change? or is it plug and play?

The new hard drive is completely empty, you'll either need to transfer the contents of the old one onto the new one, using e.g. Acronis TrueImage, or (recomended) get/use the recovery disks and install from scratch.
