CD-RW drive won't work... IBM says they will 'call me back'

#1 Post by K. Eng » Sun Feb 13, 2005 12:08 am

My desktop box is having problems. The main hard drive is making awful sounds, so I tried using my optical drive there to make a backup disk. No luck... the CD-RW drive isn't working :(

So I transfer my files over my 802.11g network to my ThinkPad. Then I try to burn the files on the CD-RW drive on the ThinkPad.

The ThinkPad's CD-RW drive makes clacking noises and the motor grinds like crazy. IBM Record Now (version 7) gives me error messages. This happens 3 times. 3 Coasters added to my collection.

So I call IBM up, and the technician has me reinstall DLA to see if it's just a problem with Record Now. No luck. The drive makes the same awful noises and I get an error message. A fourth CD-R is now toast. The tech says that his boss will call me back later, but he doesn't know when.

This is #$(*!$#!

I have 2 drives with CD-RW capability and both are messed up! And I have no idea when IBM will get back to me on my ThinkPad's drive.

I got most of my important documents and photographs onto USB flash drives, but some stuff (like my Half Life 2 backups) are too big and need to be put onto CD-ROMs. Now I am unhappy because I have no idea when my T40's optical bay will be back in business, and I have backups to make. The most the tech offered was to have his boss call back - he didn't offer to send out a replacement drive.

I'm calling IBM back in the morning... to freakin tired right now to argue with anyone and I want a [censored] replacement drive.

That is very strange, my T42's CDRW drive got problem, I called them up for 5 minutes and got a brand new one in 2 days. Why don't you try again, and open a new case number. Good luck

Brian,

If you're truly desperate to burn some CDs I've got a couple of extra 16X Ultrabay Slim burners and I'd be happy to lend you one if you wanted to drive over and get it.

But, I'd call IBM back and get a replacement under warranty, you'll have it no later than Tuesday from Mechanicsburg.

Regards,

James
