I am seeking for original notebook
I am seeking for original notebook
Hello all, I tried deffirent models of different vendors and eventually decided to purchase an original IBM, so I have several questions.
What is the last model 100% original?
Where the following models were made T21, T22, T23?
Is that possible mistakenly to buy chinese T23, thinking that it is original?

Re: I am seeking for original notebook
Welcome to the forum.
You ask about 100% originality, which poses a few problems in answering.
PCs including Thinkpads are made of components that come from various sources. It all depends on who can supply the best quality components. 'Best quality' means how well the components fit the needs in terms of price, availability, and warranty. If a machine is to be given a 3 year warranty then all the components need to match that.
IBM sold machines under their label, however Lenovo made the machines for IBM for ages before IBM sold them the PC division.
It is a gamble whether the parts are American, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, or made by a penguin in Antarctica.
One question; why does it matter?

Thank you for the answer. It's clear now.
There is an opinion that American exemplars are made better than...
Of course, it seems be a prejudice only and absolutley no difference where they were made but the deep process in mind sometimes broadcasts an alert: "Don't buy Chinese! Or you will bring it to service after two years".
But what about the certain - T23?

Re: I am seeking for original notebook
The T23 I'm using right now (2647-HNU 78-xxxxx) has a "Made in Mexico" statement on the large IBM label. Not sure about the rest of systems that I have but if the S/N number is any indication of country of origin, then 95% of them have "78-xxxxx". I also have one each of "KP-xxxxx" and "99-xxxxx" so I'll try to track them down tonight and see where they came from.
edit: The T23 with the S/N that starts with a "99" is my LG-branded system. There's only a note on the IBM label which says that it was manufactured for IBM but not a country of origin. There is also some Korean lettering on the label. Not sure where the "KP" system is at the moment but I'll look for it this weekend.
edit2: The "KP" system has a "Made in Mexico" label. Found another T23 (2647-4NU) with a "99" serial number in my inventory. It has a "Made in China" statement on it, right below "Manufactured for IBM Corporation Armonk, New York, USA".

rkawakami, Very well, thank you. I'll try to find this model to purchase it.

Well, then I guess no more Thinkpads for you at this time. Unless you only buy 8-year old machines...BlackRu wrote:Of course, it seems be a prejudice only and absolutley no difference where they were made but the deep process in mind sometimes broadcasts an alert: "Don't buy Chinese! Re: I am seeking for original notebook
i THINK the T30 was also made in mexico..
i also THINK that the last thinkpad made in the USA was the 701..
the last time i have a new thinkpad made in japan was a 770..
for me i would not disrespect the chinese but rather the quality control of the people who put their name on the product..
the chinese are very good at making what you want them to make..
sadly, competitive pressures cause many to cut corners..
i would think that, from what i have seen, the lenovo thinkpads are as good as the IBM thinkpads..
whether made in japan, the USA, mexico or a factory in china..
sparkling wine:
champagne comes ONLY from france, anything else is not champagne but sparklling wine..
that said DOM is excellent but there are california sparkling wines and even spanish that come close..
russian vodka is great but after the first drink, who cares where it came from..
point is it is the finished product not the country of manufacture that will tell the tale..

Re: I am seeking for original notebook
Some of the wine used in Champagne has been known to come from the English county of Kent.
Which just goes to affirm what I said about components ... it doesn't matter where the components come from and who made them so long as they are a quality product.
The label on Champagne says it is made in France ... it doesn't have to say 'sometimes from French grapes mixed with English grapes'.
I have had PCs that said made in Scotland but the parts came from anywhere.
Same as your car came from Germany made of Spanish, Czech, and Polish parts.
Most of the UK Vodka is made in Warrington (NW England). Same old stuff and does the job.

Re: I am seeking for original notebook
FWIW, even ThinkPads that are labeled as being built in USA by/for IBM/Lenovo, all have Foxxconn motherboards. I have three T4x units and a R6x that fit that description in my house right now.
I've owned a T30-a long time ago-that had a label of having being built in the USA, but excluding the "from U.S. and non-U.S. components" disclaimer that the laptops mentioned above all have...
Unless one is on a quest for a very specific custom-built unit, I doubt that any of this really matters much, not past A3x/T30 generation anyway...

Re: I am seeking for original notebook
701C is an interesting model. If I not mistake was made in 1995 and named here in Russia "butterfly", but it's difficult to find it in Russia, I will buy it too without any doubts.
P.S.
paradox - I am Russian, but I don't like Russian vodka especially when it's made from the acetone... It's better "two beer or two beer" or "two beer or not to be" - an old joke....
Possible sounds ungrammatically

For the best vodka nowadays, you have to go to Poland (Bison anyone, or Chopin?), although the Armadale vodka (made in Scotland of all places) is not to be sneezed at either!

Around $50.- for shipping via USPS Priority Mail.
I don't have any Linux, but we could discuss a price reduction, if you supply your own [Linux] OS.
PM me with your ideas.

Re: I am seeking for original notebook
i was always warned of russian customs officials having LOTS of really neat stuff at home..
but i have not sent anything to russia for at least 7 years..
thinkgs may have changed..
last time a russian bought a thinkpad he drove to paris to pick it up from a trusted customer who agreed to receive and hold it for him..
acetone..??!
i would think grain alcohol is cheaper to make than acetone..

I ship stuff big and small to Russia on regular basis, and although my customers have encountered occasional headaches when dealing with customs officers, nothing ever got stolen or arrived damaged...
