You're wanting to use this new hdd as the primary, to replace the existing disk?

When you say "copied existing hd" , how? Using some disk imaging s/w ?

Sorry for the duplicate response richk, takes a minute or two longer for posts from all the way over here

tomjrc, the only reference to "RocketFish" I can find is external drives so sounds like you have just copied the original drive's files, including the OS files; that won't give you a bootable disk that you can simply plug in as primary (at least not in a Windows environment).

Unless their "Transfer Kit" is designed to do this (but I think it's probably just for backup/restore), you would need to do an image copy (Ghost, Acronis, Clonezilla (?)) or if the original hdd has its restore partition, create a restore CD set from that and do an install to the new hdd and re-instate any apps, user docs, etc. Or (IMO) better, do a proper clean install from an OS disk.

Well thanks! I,ll check the specs on my software and see what it is supposed to do. If you are right I,ll try to copy by using Acronis .It will take me a day or so but I will post my progress. thanks again.

Quick tip on Acronis and Thinkpads...install the new target drive in the Thinkpad, and connect the old source drive externally. Use an Acronis boot CD.

I took your tip and installed the new drive in the computer and the old drive in a transfer kit by usb. I opened computer with Acronis cd and would like some help from here.
when it opens it shows either back up or restore. I thought back up and chose it. then in the browse window it shows on the left column NEW VOLUME C and below IBM PRELOAD D
Do I click C or D?

Go back to the first screen and choose clone from the top list...under utilities I think.

If you don't have an aversion to GPL and want to not pay, then Clonezilla ("Live" version) it's easy enough to use & it works; otherwise pay up for a fully functional commercial product.

If you do decide to use CZ then HarryC's comments on "which disk where" would apply equally.

What version OF Acronis should be used to make a new recovery disk with some of your user installs. I understand that there is a great difference in versions but do not know what they are.
