X41 disk failure, error 0200 *PIC*

#1 Post by vladis » Mon Oct 12, 2009 5:09 am

Hi,
I bought from second hand this nice peace without HDD as working one, but:

I put inside:
1./ my 1,8" toshiba hdd that came from broken HDD MP3 player, but in external box is fully working ( with clean format fat32 )
2./ classic 2,5" hdd from my other laptop

still displays: Error 0200: Failure Fixed Disk 1

.. on the other side, it can boot from a CD, I can go to the bios and with no HDD " No operation system found " and laptop is in wery nice clean condition like brand new :)

btw: I dont have a hdd case, so I am connecting hdd without it.

what should be wrong ?

thanx for respond. I reailly like this one and want to fix it.

Are you using a IDE-ZIF adapter?
If so, was it the aftermarket PCB type or the Lenevo OEM type?
Did you remove the palmrest to insert the adapter?
Can you post a picture of your setup?
Does the adapter have a 3.3V regulator?
Did you bypass the regulator?

No I am not using ide-zif adapter.
I dont actually know what is that palmrest, take a look on pictures :)

I bought laptop without hdd and without hdd bezel that carry hdd. I simply placed HDD alone into HDD shaft, so he isnt fixed there firmly.

I think, there is no adapter, take a look :)

btw: Linux runs breezily from usb flash drive with no complications.
Can X41 boot from SD card slot too ? It could be back-up solution, if HDD wont start work.

Palmrest is also called keyboard bezel, the plastic piece around the keyboard. Removing it allows you to make sure HDD is inserted correctly. Removing 12 screws seemed a lot but I prefer to do that than make a mistake. The are two wiring connectors on the right side under the KB that needs to be released also.

The HDD actually goes in upside down, PCB side facing up.
