Max hard drive size for T42? 160 or 320 GB known OK?
That's the question, I'd like to upgrade the hd in my niece's T42 while there are still some PATA laptop drives around.
Is this 2.5" wide 9.7mm tall maximum? And will the BIOS play happy with 160 or 320GB drives?

Apparently the Samsung 160GB or WD Scorpio 320GB are the preferred HDs.
No problems with either one.

I just installed a Samsung 160GB HM160HC in my T42 week before last, no problems once I implented the hdparm fix (do a forum search for details) for the "superclick". The drive is quiet as can be.

Matt, all I find is a single message, as below, that indicates the problem is not a problem and the fix may be worse than ignoring the clicking. Is this what you are talking about, or what exactly?

Location: St. Louis, MO The hard drive is a 120 Gig Fujitsu. One of the few on the T43's compatibility list.
I've actually gone on quite a ride...
- The clicking (which a LOT of drives suffer from).
- Googling the clicking.
- Finding out the clicking is a head parking thing.
- Using HDPARM to mess with power savings (which stops the clicking)
- Finding out the drive resets itself on reboot or after resume.
- Finding out NHC keeps the power settings disabled all the time
- Paying for NHC
- Finding out the pay version doesn't work under Vista/Win7
- Finding out quietHDD works better than NHC, AND can install as a service under Vista/Win7
- Happily using quietHDD as a Service, contacting quietHDD's author and telling him how to install it as a service using Microsoft's Resource Kit tools (the srvany.exe app)
- Exchanging lots of emails with someone from Fujitsu USA
I've tried to update my site with what I've found out, including what the person from Fujitsu told me.
http://xenomorph.net/misc-and-old-stuff ... rd-drives/
Basically,
- the head parks reduce the chance of drive damage if a shock was to occur
- their studies revealed next to no wear from frequent parks
- even if you hit 600,000 or even over 1,000,000 Load_Cycle_Counts, SMART will NOT nag you or warn of drive failure
- nothing in the drive will cause it to fail after 600,000 Load_Cycle_Count
- the clicking isn't bad, wont kill the drive early, and should just be ignored.
So I after I find a real fix with quietHDD running as a Service, someone from Fujitsu convinced me it didn't need to be fixed in the first place.

And that message refers to a Fujitsu drive not a Samsung one...
I've had Samsung 160GB drives in a couple of T42/p machines (as well as in A31p and my Panasonic) and was very pleased with them. Probably the best drive on the market in that size, at least in my opinion. YMMV.

No problems with either one.

What do you call cheap? (Aren't all hd's cheap compared to ten years ago<>)
I saw the WD320 PATA for $89, sadly can't use the SATA for $69, right?

But for the T42 you have no choice but PATA, I don't know in the US, but here in Switzerland the WD 320GB cost 20 bucks more than the Samsung 160GB. When upgrading my X31 I thought it was worth the extra money.

Yes, and for the difference, the 320 is worth going for instead of using the 250, too.

Will you then pick the WD up? Keep us posted about the results...
I don't think that X31s and T42s architecture differ that much. As said before I had no issues at all, HD in, install OS and voila! A running laptop! Your niece will have plenty of space for her stuff...
