Stickers melting off the chassis

#1 Post by andypenguin » Sun Feb 13, 2005 4:15 pm

I just noticed today that the Windows XP sticker actually has a hole in it. It looks like the heat from under the computer is melting away at it slowly. I've run a few games on it and Mobile Meter reports around 67C immediately after I exit the game. Is this too hot for a P-M TP? Is anyone else's sticker melting too? Just want to make sure mine isn't going to explode or something...

What model do you have? Where are your stickers? The stickers on my T42 are on the left wrist rest, which is basically a slab of plastic over the PC Card slots. So they never really get hotter than room temperature.

I have the T42 2378-FVU. The sticker I am referring to is the one underneath the system, the XP Pro sticker with the product key on it. It's to the left and underneath what I assume to be the CPU, as it gets pretty warm/borderline hot under there when I'm doing any CPU-intensive tasks. The right portion of the sticker with all the litle blue letters on hit now has a hole with a silver "GENUINE" strip running through it.

I have an FVU ad I ran DOOM3 on this. It did get pretty hot. I think mobile meter reported temperature above 70 C
Just make sure that when you play those intense games you have well ventilated area and may be those laptop coolers may come in handy.

The COA should not get that hot. The CPU is on the other side of the notebook. The COA is actually below the Ultrabay Slim slot and adjacent to the hard drive. What kind of hard drive do you have?

Well, as long as 67C isn't way over the mark (I've only used a P4-M before, and those things BURN)

Why'd they have to put that sticker right there...? :? A little disconcerting seeing it melting if you ask me.

EDIT:

I have the Hitachi TravelStar 5K80 5400rpm.
Though, if I'm not mistaken -- isn't the HD underneath the right palm-rest? The sticker is above that area.

I think that hole is actually supposed to be there.

When I first got my 2378-FVU, it came with the hole on the Windows XP sticker. My guess is that it prevents people from making counterfeit stickers (notice the holograms, fine printing, etc.) If you look closely, there should actually be a thin layer of plastic over the hole, meaning the ThinkPad could not have "melted" one. The sticker also probably self-destructs if you try to remove it, preventing re-use on another machine.

Well at least I think that's the reason, although I could be wrong.

(Get down, it's gonna blow!!! )

That is a REALLY good point :)

I'll still keep an eye on it though, it sure looks like the bottom layer is melted.

Thanks for the heads up. In my mad rush to turn it on I didn't really notice the hole.

It also turns out the side that I said was really hot earlier was actually the opposite side of the machine, where the CPU is... so... sorry about that, false alarm!

My new T42 same model as you, has that "hole". I believe it is part of the protection Bill engineered.

I notice my temps running a video game get to around 60C or so. I now use a Targus Chillpad under the laptop. Normal surfing is around 44C. Without the cooler pad, temps are 2-4C higher. On warm days sitting in the sun streaming thru the windows, It can hit 48C surfing without the pad. 44ish with pad.

I found this 1.7 Centrino is 4-8C hotter than my earlier 1.6.

Thanks treker! Now I can rest easy knowing that it's not going to melt a hole through itself.

The processor is on the other side of the laptop from the sticker underneath; the disk drive is forward of the sticker; the sticker is under the ultrabay. It is hard to imagine how the sticker could melt (the engineered hole in my sticker is still full).

I don't play games, but in constant disk/CPU activities, my CPU maxes out at 57 - 58 degrees, and the disk never exceeds 40 degrees.

The hole is one of the COA's security features, ie. it was made like that. No need to worry about burning a hole in your pants... IBM already did that when you bought your notebook :D
