T60 screen problem

My T60 has developed a problem where the entire bottom third of the screen is either lighter than the rest of the screen or completely screwed up looking. It is affected by movement in the lid, or by tapping the back of the lid. Is there anything I can check first before I consider a new screen?

If tapping the back of the case causes the problem, it is unlikely to be the cable. It sounds to me like the panal is sick.
