XP insists on WEP password, but it's really WPA

#1 Post by John H » Wed Oct 14, 2009 2:38 pm

The XP network manager on my T40 insists on a wireless WEP password, but the wireless router is really WPA. So, of course, it complains about the number of characters. There seems to be no way to change it, either by re-installing the wireless connection or by fussing with any of the dialogs.

You have a Wireless b card? If you do the ones i've dealt with can't do WPA.

My wireless router is a Cradlepoint CTR500, which I got to support the Verizon USB727 3G card.

Yes, but what card is in your T40? It may not support WPA.

Are you using the latest drivers? Even though the card is old, its not that old. And WPA was designed so it would work with a card originally designed for WEP only. The only thing needed was a software update. Does the card work with WPA in ubuntu? (presuming that the T40 in your signature is the one you're trying to get WPA working on)

Yes, the T40 card works with ubuntu, so it must be the Windows XP driver that is down-level. I'll get the latest from Lenovo and install it.

Thanks.

You have the latest BIOS? I remember for my R40 I did see on the latest BIOS that there was support for "G" added. Maybe your is sort of the same?

Maybe you have manual setting to WEP in wireless connection properties?

I put the latest T40 driver (from lenovo) for the Intel Pro adapter in and no change!

I never get a setup or properties box or anything else that offers WPA. WEP seems to be glued in.

Maybe I'll try to put a Win7 on the T40. That old XP is ancient, and I only have a couple programs on the windows side (Win 7 requires that ALL your XP applications get re-installed from scratch).

I'll just get the cheapest Win7, the $100 edition, that's probably all I need for infrequent use. Still, I shouldn't have to. But the COA is all messed up, so I probably can't just do an upgrade. [censored] M$!

SP2?

I'll check for it. That's easy enough to add.
