Upgrading to Hitachi 7k6, will it void warranty?

#1 Post by $uperman » Sun Feb 13, 2005 10:31 pm

I'm thinking about upgrading
my T41's, 5k4 Futjitsu to 7k5 Hitachi.

Will it void my laptops warranty if the
drive is not bought from IBM and intalled
my me?

It will be an IBM drive.

Also are the extra 20 gigs and more speed
worth the added noise and $50 which is what
the upgrade will cost me?

Thanks!

Live long the Thinkpad:)

And if you do need warranty service on something other than the HD, don't send IBM the hard drive of course. This goes for people who've replaced their hard drive as well as those with stock drives. They don't need it, and sending your valuable data to them can only result in tragedy.

On this note, is there any special criteria for Active Protection at the drive level?

I just recently upgraded my T42 from a Hitachi 40GB 5400RPM to the 60GB 7200RPM. The drive protection is still active and working with the new drive. While doing an install yesterday I gently bumped my table and heard the hard drive stop for a second or two then go back to the trashing sound. My protection is also set up to high so any bump will pause the drive.

The Active Protection System is (as I understand it) based on a motion sensor built into the motherboard of the Thinkpad.
There is nothing involved that physically attaches to the hard drive or the hard drive carrier.

Thanks for clearing this up I always thought the active protection system was part of the drive.

Is every drive able to park its head on command, though?

As far as I can tell there shouldn't be a difference with drives, otherwise we swould see "special" T series drives popping up, and with all the people on this forum upgrading their HD, having not seen any complaints about the airbag yet, I think that's a pretty sure bet that any HD will work.

Anyway, good choice. The 7K60 runs really fast, although gets a little warm sometimes.
