New Wireless Insert Card

#1 Post by gtruk9 » Sat Oct 17, 2009 4:16 pm

I am only getting about 11 Mbps on my older wireless card.

I am thinking about upgrading to an IBM Thinkpad MINI PCI Wireless LAN 802.11B / V.90 Modem Combo Card-- for example which I can find on eBay.

Would this be the way to go to upgrade for example....

Thanks in advance

802.11b has a maximum raw data rate of 11 Mbit/s, so no, that would not be an upgrade. For faster transfer rate you will need 802.11g or n specs on both the router or access point you are using and the card in your laptop.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

I do have a g router so if I get a 802.11g card this should get a better signal right?

Thanks in advance once again

Depends on the speed of your router. If you have a G router and a G card ,then you have G speed, etc.

So by Jeeves what would a G speed be off of a G Router in Mbps anyhow.

I guess what I am asking which I should have initially I suppose, is what is a good g card to try to get for a R40 which I have.

Thanks again

IBM (Atheros) b/g or abg will work great in R40, with no "1802" issues.

And the theoretical speed of a G-card would be 54Mbps, while some cards with Super-G even reach a theoretical 108Mbps (provided your router is also 108Mbps capable).

There are no standards on Super-G. So you will need a matching set, card and router/AP, from the same product series.

I finally got myself a intel wireless card for my R40 that is a g -- when I put it in an 1802 error non authorized card shut down and take out error -- does this mean I need a new bios flash or another card. This new one is an intel pro wireless 2200B/G
Yet I got this from another post --
ajkula66 wrote:IBM (Atheros) b/g or abg will work great in R40, with no "1802" issues.
At one point I did reboot with the new b/g card without the 1802 issue because I accidently didn't plug in the card all the way. Then I flipped the laptop and pushed it in all the way whereas I bypassed the 1802 error by accident. Then it connected at 54mbps and went faster on my wireless connection.

How do I bypass the 1802 issue... is it a bios thing or should I get another card, an IBM (Atheros) (see quote above) to try.
Thanks in advance GT

I said IBM (Atheros) not Intel...anyway...

Try updating the BIOS and see whether it helps. If it doesn't...

Good luck.

I know that you said IBM but according to other sources the intel was supposed to work in the r40... nevertheless the 1802 error obviously precludes the issue that the r40 does like the Intel card -- so do you know where to go to get a new bios and is it worth the effort or should I just get the right IBM card... the other was a freeby from a guy that has lots of cards from old laptops.

Thanks

I put an Intel 2100 card in my R-40 and I needed the No 1802 fix that was reported here. I believe it's in one of the "sticky" topics at the top of this list. It's a BIOS hack that lets the older Thinkpad work with a newer WiFi card.

The 2200 is a great wireless card. Do the No 1802 fix (you have to remove the WiFi card first) and you should be golden.
