R40e: fan doesn't run after resume from hibernation
R40e: fan doesn't run after resume from hibernation
This is not a usual issue of "fan not working / too noisy / etc.". The fan works fine. Except after I resume from hibernation when, sometimes, the fan won't run and the thing overheats and shuts itself down after a couple of minutes. This only ever happens after resuming from hibernation, and switching off and back on fixes it. It has only started happening recently (after I bought a new battery, though this may be coincidence).
Currently, it's just annoying, but I'm guessing there is a finite number of times it will shut itself down from overheating before there is some damage.
I appear to have all the latest bios/embedded controller software versions. I'm running Windows XP.
Any clues?
Cheers,
Graham.

Welcome to the forum.
First question: is that an original IBM/Lenovo battery or a knock-off?
If the latter, that's your culprit!

Thanks for your reply! It's a knock-off.
Is this a known issue? Or is there another possible cause? That it appears to occur only sometimes, and only immediately after resume-from-hibernate had lead me to believe it's a software issue rather than the battery.
Cheers,
Graham.

Most problems with knock-offs do happen in the charging circuit, not too often in 'waking up'.
What happens if you remove the battery, then hibernate on AC only (wait 1/4 hour), then wake up, same story?
If so, start checking your power settings.

You're right, some experimentation is called for.
The power settings all look fine, and I've tried setting them to something else, rebooting, then setting them back and rebooting.
It might just be that it's getting a bit old. It's quite impressive that it still works after five years!
Cheers,
Graham.

In Thinkpad life expectancy terms, your R40 is still too young for a 'midlife crisis'.
Other forum members have TPs dating back to the 1990s, which are still going strong!
Have you checked free space on your HD? Do a CHKDSK /F, then do some housecleaning with CCleaner (free on the web), then do a complete defrag.
See what happens...
