W7 works on a TP 600x

#1 Post by obarriel » Sun Oct 18, 2009 4:54 pm

Just to note that W7 can boot in a standard Thinkpad 600x and is useable, althought quite slow.
You just need to patch the installation files to avoid a W7 restriction that avoids the installation on system with less than 512mb. No other problems.

My 600x is not a upgraded unit (pIII 500mhz, 384mb ram, 20gb 4200rpm HDD). In systems with maximum ram and a fast HDD or SSD and probably with some W7 tweaks I guess W7 would be a option to consider even for everyday use.

Thinkpad 600 always alive.

Thats impressive that it runs on such old hardware!
I had tried the RC on my X30 with 1GB of RAM and after installing drivers for everything, I found it slower than XP in many aspects, especially with Flash movies (youtube). Plus I found the CPU temp to be on average 10-15 degrees higher and thus more uncomfortable to use on my lap.

Why would you do that? I find that even running Xubuntu and Windows XP, my 600X can't even play YouTube videos smoothly. Windows 7 certainly won't help.

I think the OP just did it to see if it would work. I still use win 2k on my 600x, but i dont expect it to view you-tube videos. Browsing and office only.
