Ubuntu Compiz Cube can't get the cube

#1 Post by dacp » Sun Oct 18, 2009 5:57 pm

Does anyone have a step by step procedure for the cube? I've been on youtube and ubuntu forums and have the download done and set-up, clicked the right buttons and unclicked the right v=buttons but my cube still does not work. On the bottom right corner I can by holding crtl button and arrow right spin the cube but can not get the cube alone in the middle of my screen? using crtl - alt and arrow up does nothing, been told to use crtl and F11 but it does nothing. What am I doing wrong?

By default, Ubuntu does not come with the cube plugin. For the cube and many other plug-ins you need to install additional software.

compiz-gnome
compiz-plugins
compiz-fusion-plugins-extra
compiz-fusion-plugins-main

Then configure it to use a cube.

Hi, dacp,

I just wrote about this! The article should be up on Bright Hub in the next day or so.

Did you download compizconfig-settings-manager (ccsm)? That's where the controls are, and it's not in the base image of Ubuntu.

After doing that, you'll have taken care of all the necessary dependencies.

Select System - Preferences - CompizConfig Settings Manager.

Under the General tab, click General Options.

Click on the "Desktop Size" tab and slide "Horizontal Vertical Side" to 4 (to make a box). Then click Back.

Under the Desktop tab, unselect "Desktop Wall" and select "Desktop Cube" and "Rotate Cube."

Optionally, you can select "Cube Refection and Deformation" under the Effects tab to make a cool circular effect, but if you do, select it FIRST and then go back and pick up desktop cube and rotate cube.

When done, click Close.

To spin the cube, press Ctrl and Alt and mouse button #1. Then drag the desktop to right or left, up or down with the mouse. I do this using the trackpad.

OR press Ctrl+Alt left or right arrow to "flip" to the next virtual screen.

And to make a screen shot, position the cube where you want it, lift your finger off Ctrl while still holding ALT and mouse button #1, and press the PrtSc button.

I hope this works for you! (It's a really cool effect.)

No problem, friend!

It's out here on the 'net now for anyone who needs it to find.

I realized after answering that it was an older post. I'm just glad that you got it fixed.

Instead of making a new thread, I figured I'd ask here.

I have an x200 w/ ubuntu 9.10.

I have gotten the cube to work on a desktop, but on my x200, when I try to install the CompizConfig Settings Manager, i don't get the option even though it appears in the ubuntu software center. I am using the 32bit variant as the 64bit is severely limited.

The center states:

Not available in current data

Canonical does no provide updates for advanced desktop effect settings. Some updates may be provided.... blah blah.

Is this due to the x4500HD intel video hardware that I can't do hardware acceleration or something?

Wobbly windows are currently working great. I wanted to enable the cube since it would provide much more real estate since I am limited to a single monitor.

Any ideas?

If windows wobble then compositing is enabled. You either haven't installed the cube plugin or it is not activated.

Or you didn't set up 4 windows so you could get the cube.
