battery stop working after fresh OS install

#1 Post by gp-clipper » Wed Oct 21, 2009 11:30 am

Hi everyone,

I've got a "new" X41 tablet that came with no operating system. It originally booted up with the battery and the battery did fully charge when left plugged in. Well, I've been installing Win XP Pro (NON tablet version) and the Lenovo drivers. I went to undock the laptop and the unit shut down. I then tried to boot from just the battery, but it does nothing. When I plug the unit back in, the Power Mgmt software says that it is 98% charged. IBM's system utility says that the battery is also 98% charged, but only 48% total charge capacity available.

Am I missing something, or did the new OS install change something so that the unit won't work off of battery?

Thanks,
Gary

It may just be a very poor battery. If you remove the HDD, and display the BIOS screen, does it stay on?

I'm a bit confused...when I remove the Hard drive is the machine supposed to be plugged in? I removed the hard drive and the tried to turn it on wo/power supply and nothing happened. I plugged the laptop in and it did power on and got to the bios info screen and said no operating system found. I unplugged the laptop and it shut downimmediately, even though the battery was still installed. Am I going the the procedure that you are suggesting?

According to the Power mgr software the battery has a capacity of 31.39 Wh (98 % charged), 0.00A current, 16.43 voltage, cycle count 171, no wattage, and temp 30 C.

I charged the system up before loading the operating system and the battery was able to power up the laptop to the bios screen and give me the no OS message. I also went through Lenovo's steps to reset the battery by powering it down for one minute, but that also had no effect.

Any ideas?

Seems like a bad battery. I had an almost new battery manufactured by Sony. It did the same thing.
