I tried looking back and really didn't see an answer to my problem.
I have an R-40 (2723-CTO). I first got it as a "P&R" and I put it together with some memory, hard drive, DVD, etc. and it seemed to be running great. BIOS flashed to latest version, and a wireless card was started up with help from the posts here explaining the 1802 error (thanks!).
Then one day it slipped off my lap and fell about 2 feet to a carpeted surface.
Now when I turn it on, the fan runs. Then it never seems to run at any point. Eventually the system will halt; screen is frozen in position, all lights look normal. But you can't move the cursor nor can you enter anything from the keyboard. Classic CPU lockup, normally due to overtemperature. The "runtime" shortens with repeated starts.
I put in one of the fan programs mentioned here. I restarted the computer and the program said temperature was 27ºC. Put it on chart and left. The computer froze with the temperature still showing 27ºC. Restart and the program says 37ºC. The program did not find a programmable fan, but I changed the operation to operate at 35ºC and alarm at 40ºC. Let the computer idle for a while and came back to find the temperature at 27ºC. Left it a little longer and it froze again.
I wonder if I need to replace the fan, given it runs on boot. What else could be my problem?

Re: R-40 Freezes
Obviously something broke or came loose during the fall.
Could be the CPU has 'lifted' a bit. Take the fan of and reseat the CPU.
Clean the CPU/fan and re-apply fresh thermal paste.
Do testruns 'as-you-go'.

Does the HDD have a sled/cage? If not, maybe HDD not making good contact?

Re: R-40 Freezes - SOLVED
Just want to update:
I got a new fan. Installed it. Of course, fresh heat compound.
Now it's running fine. I love the USB 2.0 (works with all my microscope cameras). Wish my T40p worked right (but I see I'm in good company with that).
Incidentally, I had a complete sled/cover for the hard drive (it came with the cover and I had spare sleds from various 600, T23, etc. machines I have been working on).
I've been a member of this Forum for a long time, and I appreciate all the great people out here who can help.
