T43, burned circuit, replacement possible?

#1 Post by Rushdie » Wed Oct 21, 2009 8:10 pm

Hi
I own a T43 (2668-CTO) that suffered a unfortunate encounter with a full cup of coffee a couple of years back. Long story short, the T43 runs great with the AC adapter connected. It also runs great on battery alone, but it's not capable of charging it. This makes it kinda hard to charge the battery... :)

Anyhow, I want to fix the problem, and after disassembling the laptop, I found some nasty stuff:

It's just south of the LCD connector. It got a nice crispy surface, but the circuits looks ok.

On the other side of the board, things are a little bit different:

The circuit that the red arrow is pointing at is completely blown. I can't find any markings on it... The blue arrow points to a (mosfet) circuit marked "TPC8111", and it appears to fine (no visual damage). The yellow arrow points to a unknown thingy, looks like a crystal oscillator of some sort.

Now, I wouldn't call myself an Solder Iron Knight, but I've successfully changed IC DAC:s on sound cards, so I believe I could fix this as well. What I'm looking for is the make/name/part number of the blown circuit and maybe even the crystal as well. If you have this information, or know where I could get hold of it, I would be most grateful.

Red arrow points to 6-legged chip with .573AD printed on top
Yellow arrow points to what is only a solder-junction of 2 items, no chip there!

The above circuitry seems to be the same for all T4x mobos (and probably R5x as well).
Find one with e.g. the GPU problem, and 'scrounge' the parts from there.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

So, I did manage to locate an T42-board (probably with a GPU-defect), and I used it to charge my old battery. I managed to run it on battery for over 3.5h, amazing that an old battery that has been stored empty would work that good.

Anyhow, I measured the working T42-board (resistor values etc), took that burned circuit from the T42-board, soldered it onto the T43-board, double-checked the fuse, measured, and fired it up. Surprise.... it doesn't work. But the board seems to at least try to charge the battery, because if I plug in the charger with the battery present, CPUmark / windows states that the battery is being charged. Then after about 5-10s, the board stops charging (probably never starts).

Not only did the fix not work, I destroyed the only means of charging the battery. Double trouble! :p

Any fuse I might have missed? Other circuitry that could be damaged? Measuring points and values that I could try?
